  • As is the way with my days off these days, there is no rush ever. Jan works long days and even longer nights in an intensive care department and there is NO shift pattern at all to allow a person’s body clock to plan the week. Her need for sleep catch up is vital, so I have learned not to expect a 7am leap out of bed, and instead to respect her body clock readjustment time. It doesn’t stop me getting fidgety however if the light looks amazing, and the day is going by :-)<br />

It was Sunday however, and for Jan a rare Sunday off, so whatever! The weather forecast was for brightness, light cloud, zero chance of rain and plenty of sunshine later. We could do a lazy leisurely hill walk later with no worries about the elements or timings. I didn’t really absorb the additional information I skimmed through on the mountain weather forecast though, which indicated freezing level at summits and 45mph winds. Nevertheless we threw in our Paramo’s and Rab wind proofs just in case, along with two flasks of steaming hot coffee.<br />

At about 2pm we started the one hour drive towards the distinctive pyramid shaped mountain called Cnicht. I haven’t done it for couple of years and I love the mountain (approximately 2200 feet). I have done it from the very meandrous North side and also from the shadowy East facing quarry valley of Cwm Orthin, which was today’s plan as I wanted to show Jan the old quarry workings. However, as part of her prep for some bigger mountains in the next few weeks she said she’d prefer a steep ascent, so we headed for Croesor on the brighter West side instead. This was a first for me too which was nice, making our way up the classic West ridge.<br />

We decided to have a cuppa and a sandwich in the cafe in the tiny, sleepy hamlet of Croesor but the cafe was so asleep it was closed! I was really surprised, this being the Easter break and a car park packed with walkers’ vehicles. We started up the long, bouldery woodland track before exiting right up towards

  • No matter how difficult life seems to be, no matter how tenuous our grip on it, we have the potential to survive most things, to grow amongst darkness and to retain a beauty and importance no matter how delicate that may be. This tree is growing on exposed barren land, with nothing but sand and a thin layer of soil beneath, but it survives all nature throws at it.

  • Not a soul around. The moon rose slowly in the rose-colured sky and the sunset burned in the farmhouse windows. Pheasants screeched to each other as they glid across the farmland. The hedgerows were dripping in lush autumnal berries and flitting amongst the dense twigs, sparrows enjoyed the pick of the crop.

  • I was struck by the simultaneous approach of dusk as the big light of the sun goes out, and also the switching on of the little household lamp in the cottage to the right. We take so much for granted these days that a little flick of the switch means we can continue to work and play through the dark hours, but that at one time night was something to be revered or even feared.

  • I was actually really excited by the subtle delicacy of it all, really ethereal and slightly surreal. I therefore left this one in colour as the muted shifts of almost desaturated colours present an honesty about the transformation of everyday vistas through simple elemental conditions.

  • There is something truly spiritual and liberating about being completely alone in the mountains. I only saw one person all day and apart from him I was completely undisturbed. I was able to watch cloud shadows scudding across the landscape, blown by bitter Easterly winds. I bathed in beams of sunlight that were lucky enough to break beneath the dark skies. The hills felt like they were mine. The grasses waved at me and the weather offered itself as a theatrical performance for me alone. Every step I took and every breath I made in the clean air connected me more fully with the planet; every downhill slope made me smile and even the tiredness of my leg muscles was a welcome reminder that I was alive and that the world still has beautiful things to offer. Living so close to the mountains, and equally so close to the sea, is almost like living in paradise.

  • Within 2 minutes I was in Llanfaelog and the most spectacular view presented itself, a full moon right behind an amazing flood-lit church of St Faelog. Even though I was in a blinding hurry, I decided to stop the van and shoot the scene anyway. Actually the moon and church weren't in the ideal alignment for the composition I wanted but by bracing my tripod over the steps of the church, I could just create a composition that worked. I shot about four exposures at varying shutter speeds to get the right cloud coverage of the moon (so much more interesting than the moon alone) and as I was making the last exposure, a huge silent white Barn Owl glid across the scene in front of me, straight out of a Tim Burton film :-) Of course with 20 second exposures there was no chance of me recording this beautiful creature, but it will always be there in memory and will always remain magical. There were other movements in the graveyard, rustles, snaps and slithers but I couldn't actually see anything. At one point I felt something brush against my trousers but still saw nothing.

  • Another bitterly cold day: you can see the hail storms in the distance. You can just make out the village at the middle left of the image. The storms were intense, and freezing cold lasted all day. I trudged up to this industrial incline and noticed a huge hailstorm heading my way, dark and threatening. I decided not to get completely bombarded, so sheltered under the incline building, with its huge view out to sea. I kitted up with over-trousers and gloves and ensured my kit was clear of any holes in the ceiling above. As I sat there watching the light levels drop rapidly, like a solar eclipse, a huge buzzard landed on a post just ahead of me. He hadn’t noticed me at first, but then turned his head and saw me. After a moment he turned back to face the hailstorm, but did not fly off – we both seemed to be acknowledging what the other was doing! The hail came and bombarded the hillside, but five minutes later it stopped and the light levels started to increase once more. He turned once again to look at me, properly eye-balled me, and then slowly took off down the valley. It was an amazing shared moment, both of us humble witnesses to the power of the heavens.

  • From a shoot alongside the BBC's 'Weatherman Walking' series with Derek Brockway. I was acting as guide for the walk because of my book about the location.<br />
<br />
We had just come up from Tre'r onto the summit of Garn Ganol. The hill fog had been very thick, swirling in a clammy wet blanket about us which was very atmospheric but also blocked all the views. Here however, the cloud suddenly parted and revealed beautiful patches of sunlit Llyn Landscape. Even the cameramen were ecstatic about the weather phenomenon before us - stunning.

  • After fighting my way up some very precarious river-banks from the mouth of the stream on the beach, having clambered over fallen branches and boulders, having avoided very sinky sand and mud, I finally came across this clearing. Here, the sun was able to penetrate the woodland. It was quite fairytale: not pretty as such, but hauntingly atmospheric.

  • The thick fog not only enveloped the beautiful Menai Strait, it also flowed deep into the woodland, separating trees and copses into delicate tonal patterns and textures, creating an almost rain-forest like appearance. <br />

On the way to work that Friday, I couldn't even see the end of our road for thick fog! As I had all my kit with me for a day's studio shooting, I drove via the bridges to see what atmospheric effects might be occurring. Whilst approaching the first lay-by, I saw a beautiful recessional tonal layering of tall trees disappearing into thick fog, almost top-lit by the weak early morning sun. However by the time I'd parked the van the fog has shifted and the recessional effect had reduced, so I walked right down to the edge of the Menai Strait to see whether either of the bridges would show through. This time I had the opposite problem where the fog was so thick I couldn't even see the field alongside me or more than 30 ft out onto the silent Strait. I trudged along a damp, muddy and waterlogged foreshore eventually meandering back up the misty fields to the road. Ironically, from this elevation, higher above the Strait, and with the sun starting to back-light the fog, I enjoyed several stunning variations of view from just a 200 yd stretch of road. The light, sunshine and fog were all dancing across the fast water when regrettably, I had to leave to open the gallery at 10.00 :-(

  • This is my 4th & largest book so far. Images are from my wanderings across the intriguingly beautiful regions of Anglesey, Snowdonia & the Ll?n.<br />

This is not a book 'about' Wales, but instead a personal collection of atmospheric images stimulated by the light, weather & culturally influenced landscape of this spectacular area.<br />
<br />
You may recognise many of the places in this book, but when you study the body of work 'as a whole' you will hopefully notice something else, something unfamiliar - sometimes disturbing, sometimes melancholy, occasionally uplifting - something that has more to do with a spiritual connection to this ancient earth, infinite skies and that fragile thing called 'life'. Welsh Light is more than just an interpretation of a magical landscape; it's a momentary insight into my search for the 'bigger picture'.<br />

  • Half an hour of amazing swirling cloud, showers and atmospheric drama last night over the Irish Sea from South Stack. I make a point of avoiding photographing the lighthouse, but I do love the sea from here. Actually the wonderfully curved curtains of rain only lasted a few minutes before becoming more regular sheets of rain.

  • A pandemic-induced re-wilding, at least in terms of peace, tranquility and a lushening landscape. Footpaths have healed and the sounds of nature were now more audible than the usual screaming of motorbikes racing up the pass.  This landscape is heavily influenced by man of course, but a vivid new sense of nature pervades the whole atmosphere of the place now.

  • After more than an hour on the freezing summit, I slowly made my way down in deep snow, each leg sinking in to thigh level! I crouched in the snow whilst bitter winds ripped my face, waiting for a promised light to change the whole character of the atmosphere surrounding Wales highest mountain. I never quite saw the summit itself but the light did produce a beauty that was awe-inspiring

  • In a streaming gale Jan and I crossed sand dunes to an almost deserted foam-strewn beach. The waves were heavy and fast and the wind was lifting and hurling foam creatures from the shoreline to the dunes, only avoiding splattering our faces thanks to slipstreaming! The sunlight was broken but when it burst through it was warm and rich, sparkling off the wet sand, backlighting oxygenated suds, waddling their way from the water margin. It was a bitterly cold air-stream sweeping down from the North, and poor Jan looked like a frozen rigid Chilli pepper in her new Paramo coat as I stumbled around on wave-soaked reefs. I was excited by the events in front of me but was ever conscious of my suffering slim companion. The spray was constant and when I looked towards the ancient burial chamber of Barclodiad y Gawres I could see horizontal sheets of spray contrasting with the brooding dark hillside. My lens was covered in spray within seconds and the thickness of salt meant that even specialist lens cloths were not effective at clearing off the saline coating - I accepted that today’s shots would be soft and droplet covered, and actually that no longer worries me these days, as atmosphere always beats detail. I balanced myself on a rock jutting from the pristine sand, ready to shoot the choppy sea but today again, I got caught out by one of those ‘tricksy’ seventh waves, which lifted to knee height which was already 18” above the beach, so this time I did get a boot-full of seawater but also a fun shot in the process - no award winner for sure but a great memory of a moment which had Jan laughing widely, even in her sub zero state :-)We walked on, my boot warming like a winter wetsuit and as I was already wet I resigned myself to further soakings as I haunched just an inch above wet sand to photograph a parade of the foamy suds. Finally we stood atop an isolated black crag in the center of this long sandy beach and we watched larger waves exploding over the offshore s

  • In amongst gypsum dunes that cover 1000s of acres, a lightning storm illuminates the centre of the large cloud over huge mountain ranges in Southern New Mexico. A 3/4 moon hangs silently between the thunder claps and our friend & tour guide Carole waits patiently in her powerful 4x4 for me to finish. I loved the atmosphere, the range of illumination and the surreal fake snow landscape! The lightning storm lasted for over an hour and 6 fighter jets from the nearby Almagordo Air Base blasted overhead into the night sky.

  • This was one of those beautiful mornings with clear, low light and stunning saturation of colour. I had walked with my friend (and book producer), Jonathan, up to the top levels on the Trefor side of the valley to get a view back down at Y Nant. The sea appeared crystal clear and almost tropical in colour whilst the sunshine just ‘clipped’ over the steep quarried hillside to differentiate the levels. With the village nestling in centre frame, this image, along with its sister image, ‘A Different Level of Amazement’, used on Carl Clowes’ guide book cover, epitomises the full layout and topography of the place, showing it in all its glory – however, for most of my visits,the weather and atmosphere were altogether moodier, and in a way more dramatic and impressive. In this glorious weather it was easier to forget the mists of the past whilst revelling in the warmth and beauty of the present.
