<br />
The undulating set of hills in the foreground is known as the roller-coaster by locals, the foothills to Wales' highest mountain, Snowdon, the name forming the root of the Snowdonia National Park, though Snowdon's real name is Celtic, Yr Wyddfa, & is the one dear to Welsh people. This hugely popular mountain is mostly deserted and offers perfect solitude as dusk settles upon it, the crowds having left by foot and railway to the warmth of the pubs and guest houses in the town nestling below.

  • From a shoot with the BBC's Weatherman Walking Series with Derek Brockway...I had just finished the last interview, where I relate one of the legends of Nant Gwrtheyrn to Derek, and they then headed off for Porth Dinllaen but I stayed back a while until almost dark, when I shot this dusk image over the Irish Sea. This is a straight shot, no colour adjustments, and a tweak to the contrast. It was stunning, after a very surreal day of swirling hill fog on the top of Tre'r Ceiri and Garn Ganol.

  • Breakers at Dusk<br />

There are always shallow pools at Porth Sûr but this one evening the sands had really shifted and this enormous two foot deep pool had appeared between the main beach and the nearby breakers. There was no one around at all, just this slightly eerie and mysterious pool, the most beautiful and subtle reflections of sky and water and the contrast against the distant breakers. As I took this image my feet were slowly sinking into the deep soft sand surrounding the pool and my body was gradually being drawn into the mirror flat pool. I’ve never seen this pool here again.

  • For such a brief opportunity to get to the coast this evening, the conditions certainly delivered and I was blessed with solitude as well. <br />
<br />
As the sun dropped, giving way to a magenta dusk, I suddenly became aware of a brightening half moon over Snowdonia. The darker became dusk the more brilliant appeared the moon and it shimmered on the retreating tide. What really made this image work for me were the gentle curves of small waves pushing over a sand bank. As in my image “Wind Formed 4”, this was perfect geometry in nature, and I was utterly captivated and found it very hard to leave.

The shift of colours between the moon-cool blues and the pink after-burn of the sunset was simply beautiful, gently mixed by the ripples from small waves. There was a confusion of colours and patterns yet within it all, a minimalist simplicity of form and composition. I was like a kid in a candy shop.

Shot on Llanddwyn beach as everyone else was leaving - well it was a bitter cold evening, no sunset, no 'obvious' excitement, but I was utterly connected that evening. In the darkness and solitude I became one with the peace, the dusk, the gentleset lapping sounds at the shore, the occassional oystercatcher calling as it skimmed the sea.   • Shot on my new Sony A7R2. Confident washes of strong wind waves powered up the beach even on the outgoing tide during a darkening dusk.<br />

The skies looked dramatic, numerous clouds being blown rapidly in a strong breeze. The air was cold enough to warrant a winter coat, but anticipating some tidal shots I wore shorts to the beach. As I stood in the sea to make more images I was surprised at how warm the waves were as they wrapped around my legs.

  • I was struck by the simultaneous approach of dusk as the big light of the sun goes out, and also the switching on of the little household lamp in the cottage to the right. We take so much for granted these days that a little flick of the switch means we can continue to work and play through the dark hours, but that at one time night was something to be revered or even feared.

  • When the crowds have gone and the leagues of dog walkers have departed for tea, the beach releases its true magic. I’ve always been fascinated by the cleansing effect of an incoming tide. I love watching the mess of footprints disappear as a new virgin floor of sand smoothes its way up the beach in front of my eyes. It’s even better when evening pulls a dark blanket of silence over the noise pollution of the day.<br />
<br />
I crouched almost at sand level, the tripod legs repeatedly covered by salty water and I enabled the fast motion of the rapid tide to move everything in the image other than the ancient rocks themselves. I walked back across the huge beach and up along the deep river in darkness. True harmony.

Clouds built over the horizon but in the last of the sun they looked beautifully dramatic, textural and crisp. In fact there was so much texture in front of me that it was hard to find the minimalist simplicity I've been drawn to recently. For maybe ten minutes the world turned pink, the hue washed over the sky and infused in the gentle waves, even the wet sand threw it back skyward. I stood in the sea, in my walking boots, wave after wave lapping at my shins but amazingly my feet stayed as warm as the sunset colours. I studied the waves smoothing and cleansing the beach before me, back to perfection.

  • "I’d enjoyed being alone in the gale-force winds on an almost deserted Llanddwyn Beach, sun shone one minute, showers the next. The relentless buffering from the gale invigorated me, made me feel alive, forcing oxygen into my lungs. As I was almost blown back towards the beach entrance, dusk seemed to have sprung upon me also. The skies were dark under weighty clouds and latent squalls. I turned back towards the island and the most beautiful delicate light was creating a huge bi-coloured yellow and white cross, Llandwyn being flagged in the centre. The waves on the outgoing tide were still forcing their way up the shore but the hard, wet sand bore the reflection of the shifting Heavens above, and everything felt perfect”

  • Unbelievable dusk burn of sunlight after a dreadful, rain flooded day. These conditions lasted such a short time but in that time I enjoyed such wonderful serenity. It was so quiet that I could hear the sound of the Afon Menai flowing by; I heard a lone Oystercatcher calling across the water but couldn't hear a large flock of gulls lazily winging across the Menai Strait, backdropped by a watercolour tapestry of weather.

  • Cape Cornwall headland near St Just projects into a treacherous stretch of Atlantic Ocean here in South West Cornwall. In the cove to the North of the point, huge granite boulders have been rounded and smoothed over eons and await the powerful waves each high tide.

  • This really is the season of storms and gales. After days of torrential rain, fingers of sunshine searched through layers of cloud trying to make a clearing. I grabbed the opportunity after work today to see if I could catch any of this dramatic light. At the coast the light had already subdued but the wind remained extremely breezy. I carried just one camera and one lens and left the tripod in the van. I had literally just 10 minutes of tantalising sunset before dusk drew a darkening curtain across the windswept stage

  • The sun had long set, but in the gathering dusk the subtle hues still looked beautiful. There was barely a breath of wind and only the gentlest of soft ripples radiated across this false bay. A young couple slowly and quietly beached a canoe on a distant pebble bank, two micro figures in a vast watercolour landscape.

  • It was a calm, silvery sea at dusk. There was hardy a drop of wind and the air, for April, was warm enough. It was near silent on the beach, just the distant voices of a couple walking in the dunes behind. <br />
<br />
I’d hoped the sun would have been a little more intense having raced across Anglesey to get to the beach, but everything was delicate and muted. From the sea bed, remnants of energy pulses from ocean storms thousands of miles away finally reared up and gasped a last breath on the shingle shore. <br />
<br />
I stood on some low rocks at the waterline and watched the sea tide slowly come in around me. Every so often a rogue bigger wave would crash over the rock and I’d lose sight of my feet in the white foam. Against the brighter surface of the sea, these little hillocks of water looked dark in their own shadows.

Tiny blades of light penetrated the thick armour of black clouds over the Irish Sea. Pierced into soft dunes were short lengths of delicate fencing, resolutely standing their ground in the shifting sand, but gradually becoming eroded by the relentless attack of wind and weather.

  • This spot is so well known to both locals and visitors due to the enormous figurehead staring blandly up the narrow steps to the street above. She both intimidates and intrigues. The Bosuns Locker itself is a long established chandlers and Penrose Sailmakers just opposite have been going since the 1825! With the docks just beyond, this is classic Falmouth living history.

  • As a village, and cove, I can romanticise about this place. It feels Cornish, and its strong links with the sea, fishing boats, pilot gigs, lifeboats and shipwrecks (of which a recent one lies just around the corner) all help to re-enforce this romantacism. However, although swamped by visitors in the summer, and now largely dominated by holiday homes, this place is still actively involved with all these activities and for me therefore, Sennen will always be what I've loved best about the life and culture of Cornwall.

  • On a baking hot day we drove into the sunset across the rugged high cliff tops of West Portugal. Jani sat in the van to call her Mam whilst I wandered down to the rocky cove. As I walked out to the low tide mark, i realised the beach was absolutely massive, miles long to the North and pure sea washed sand. The cliffs looked even higher when looking back at them. The day as usual had been clear blue cloudless sky, so it was an extra bonus to see delicate clouds gently sliding Southwards across the horizon. I had the whole beach to myself and was in seventh Heaven. <br />
<br />
However, when i turned to walk back to the car I noticed a young man curled up against the cliffs, clutching a beer bottle and looking most melancholy. I know that when I go into my dark patches, the beach becomes my salvation, my escape and my remedy - I empathised with this guy who had come miles to see the sunset on this spectacular and deserted coast.

  • 2011: A young, funny, dynamic, 19-year-old friend of my step kids had gone missing at Christmas, a few
 weeks earlier, apparently having jumped off the Menai Suspension Bridge, but no-one really knew for sure; there were no answers and no closure for his devastated family and close friends. <br />
<br />
I have always gone to the sea for solace and comfort, but after this event, the sea represented something very different – swallowing, concealing. I was thinking about how lucky I was to simply be there, to breathe, to see, to live.<br />
 <br />
The sunshine was sparkling on the water, the grass was lush and green, clouds scudded across a now clear sky and there was a cool crispness to the air; my fingers felt it, my face felt it, every bit of me was now awake and invigorated, but I wished I knew what had happened to the lad. We all guessed at scenarios but nobody dared say anything, living in hope that our worst fears would be proved wrong. It was very hard for me to be near the sea so soon after his disappearance.<br />
 <br />
I moved on to the main estuary at Newborough. The sky was changing already; the forecasted week of rain had started to develop on the horizon, a darkness drew closer and the sparkle was gone. There were still sheets of hopeful, bright patches of sky over the hills, and the last intensity of sunshine was spilling over the peninsula. I walked in shallow water across the open estuary, surrounded by sheets of mirrored sky that contained a lonely half moon looking down at me.’ <br />

Caught in squally weather, bitterly cold, blown about like a leaf in the wind, at the mercy of the elements and the huge expanse of the open sea - no, not a lonely sailing boat but me, clinging to the cliffs to try and get a shot at that magical moment, when man made and ambient light balance, that perfect window of opportunity which lasts just minutes. I love the softness of colours and contrasts in the gale driven sky behind, and the hint of comfort from the haunted lighthouse. I thought this was a joke until tonight, when as I was taking my last frame something pushed past me, really squeezing past my thigh. I honestly thought it was a dog but there was nothing there. Quite spooked.<br />

South Stack lighthouse, Holy Island, Anglesey, Ynys Môn. c1809 - Electrified in 1938 - Automated in 1984. 440 steps lead from the 200ft cliff top down to the bridge across the gorge below. We can also see here the RSPB Bird watching tower called Ellin's Tower.

  • Looking towards Albania from the Mount Pantokrator Monastery on Corfu's highest peak. The light was very soft and the sun watery but a warm glow spread across the hills, more and more intensely as the sun set. The whole time I was there, I couldn't get over how close Albania seemed, here in the UK there is - the UK! But in Corfu I was fascinated by 'notions' of borders, that by sailing a yacht in the sunshine across a short stretch of water from where tourists are swimming that I end up in another country for which I would need to let them know I'd 'arrived'- quite bizarre! I guess it comes from living on a very big island where we can't see much other land anywhere!<br />

  • When the magical, and literally 'awesome' moments of sunset mirror in virginal wet sand, it’s quite genuinely hard to beat. Double the beauty, double the drama, double the emotional response. It's just a beach, the sea and a ball of gas, so why is it that we as humans are so drawn to these simple elements when combined?

  • Low tide at sunset at Cymyran beach near Rhosneigr. A beautiful but quiet windswept beach on Anglesey's West coast. At low tide the sea always creates amazing patterns and ripples in the sand, interspersed with rivulets and streams from the inland sea.

  • With just an hour or so to spare after a dreary day on Anglesey, I headed for the coast just for the heck of it, one of my usual haunts simply because it's vast, open and easy escapism. Having enjoyed some contemplative observation in the gentle gloom, I became aware that the ambient light had increased.  When I turned around the dunes were on fire, a blazing torch of orange light was burning over the Irish Sea and the the sky was fluxing from blue to pink. The fresh salty air was now blowing in my face and I felt liberated and ecstatic, for I also knew this momentary pleasure would be over in a flash.

  • A quick detour down to Llanddwyn to photograph a huge dark snow-cloud floating over Ynys Mon, but although a sprinkling of delicate snowflakes blew past me, the snow-clouds simply disappeared, a calm sunset taking its place. The multitude of colours within the mass of pebbles in this area is quite something to consider. The wonder of geology.

  • A very wet walk on Anglesey's West Coast, so wet that for the first time ever I carried an umbrela with me to cover the camera. It was very useful without a doubt.   • Just a few days to go until Wales finds some sort of normality before the next national lockdown! The weather seems to be reflecting my / our moods at present, one minute dark clouds, rain and even hail, but the next, glorious sunshine and even a hint of warmth on your wet face. Shallow pools seemed deep and menacing but upon the surface glowed patches of clean sunlight. These rippling islands of gentle light reminded me that the sun will keep on rising and falling despite everything, and that life goes on, with or without us.

  • A lovely post night-shift walk on Llanddwyn Beach one evening. Beautiful light and no wind meant it was so tranquil.

  • August on Dartmoor. After months of earth-scorching summer the elements during our three day trip to this magical national park in the South West turned out to be mixed to say the least. Brooding clouds hovered over dark hillsides and the sun glowed rather than shone, through thin patches of grey blanket overhead. <br />
<br />
I was taken aback by how lush the valleys were, so much more tree cover than here in North Wales. The variation in the vegetation was also surprising, creating quite a tapestry of earthy greens and browns. Of course, the most exciting aspect of this landscape for me, is the granite beneath, sometimes punching upwards as huge sculptural tors, monuments amidst acres of silent grasses and foliage. I find Dartmoor uniquely spiritual, enchanting even and I can’g wait to return.

  • I arrived at the beach at the very last minute, after a long day in the gallery and a desperate need for fresh air. The sunshine on the trees and hedgerows as I swept by in my van was an intoxicating promise of things to come but even as I neared the coast I could see a band of broken cloud on the horizon and a chance of broken promises.<br />
<br />
I took a couple of frames from the sand dunes before  jogging down to the water’s edge where huge sand pools had formed. There wasn’t a drop of wind and the water surface was like a mirror. I managed about 3 subtly different frames before the sun dropped behind a layer of dark cloud and the intensity had gone for the night. <br />

  • SNIP from BLOG: "The sun briefly popped out splattering fire everywhere, and then turned to a hot red glow on the horizon, quenched after 15 minutes by a cold blue sea. Banks of clouds reared overhead and all light intensity disappeared. I walked at a fast pace back along the beach, much closer to the sand dunes this time, as the advancing tide had drowned the sand bars.".

  • A quick detour down to Llanddwyn to photograph a huge dark snow-cloud floating over Ynys Mon, but although a sprinkling of delicate snowflakes blew past me, the snow-clouds simply disappeared, a calm sunset taking its place.

  • I was the last on the hill, and the sun disappeared behind a huge bank of cloud, dulling the light completely. I watched a snowboarder carve his way down the soft snowy hillside away from me, quietly feeling the isolation, when a gentle hint of colour appeared over Snowdon. I stood for a few minutes, now completely alone, and then the light intensified and the whole landscape was bathed in the most glorious colours. The summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) appeared after two hours of waiting, so I trudged back up through thick snow to the summit of my own little hill and became quite ecstatic about everything that was happening. I was smiling from ear to ear, not even knowing where to look as it was all so beautiful, and then tears started rolling down my cheeks and I began to cry! I believe it was both the spiritual and mental joy of the situation but also an intense feeling of peace and freedom that many of us deeply crave to keep our sanity.

  • Clouds built over the horizon but in the last of the sun they looked beautifully dramatic, textural and crisp. In fact there was so much texture in front of me that it was hard to find the minimalist simplicity I've been drawn to recently. For maybe ten minutes the world turned pink, the hue washed over the sky and infused in the gentle waves, even the wet sand threw it back skyward. I stood in the sea, in my walking boots, wave after wave lapping at my shins but amazingly my feet stayed as warm as the sunset colours. I studied the waves smoothing and cleansing the beach before me, back to perfection.

  • Iwas just fascinated by the hard, angular patterns of wall and shadow in this old industrial construction, and the softness of the scoop of cloud overhead. On such a warm day it made me smile.

  • In the failing light, remnants of the old jetty stand proud against the powerful rise and fall of the sea. The waves and sky did their best to suck everything away from the beach but these small objects cling like limpets to the shoreline.

  • Just a small part of the huge private estate - with little public access, which is the current residence of Prince William and the lovely Kate. I won't be saying where there is so don't ask! US Anglesonians are quite protective of the quiet supportive couple ! :-) <br />
<br />
The nice thing is, even when the couple leave, the place will still remain beautifully rural, and simply beautiful!

  • No matter how difficult life seems to be, no matter how tenuous our grip on it, we have the potential to survive most things, to grow amongst darkness and to retain a beauty and importance no matter how delicate that may be. This tree is growing on exposed barren land, with nothing but sand and a thin layer of soil beneath, but it survives all nature throws at it.

  • A gentle breeze searched through the undergrowth for me, the ancient burial mound beyond the hill had witnessed me, I had walked in my ancestors footprints. Even as I tried to leave the place I was being watched.

  • After more than an hour on the freezing summit, I slowly made my way down in deep snow, each leg sinking in to thigh level! I crouched in the snow whilst bitter winds ripped my face, waiting for a promised light to change the whole character of the atmosphere surrounding Wales highest mountain. I never quite saw the summit itself but the light did produce a beauty that was awe-inspiring

  • From a short series of images taken after a very wet rainy day. I had gone to the beach anyway and started walking in the drizzle just to get fresh air. I played with my iPhone taking numerous fun pictures with some on-board software but as I was playing, the skies broke a little, and holes of daylight swept past, briefly and teasingly but the effect on the wet sands was awesome. The rain had meant most visitors had stayed away even the dreaded dog walkers and their sand destroying pooches ! I was alone and totally in the zone.
