  • Patterns caused by wind blowing different weight sands across the vast wind swept beach of Morfa Dyffryn near Barmouth, Mid Wales. <br />
<br />
We turned North and immediately felt the full brunt of the Northerly gale in our faces. Progress was not difficult but was definitely slow. The wind was so strong that sheets of sand were lifted off the beach and blown towards us like swirling fog around our feet. A dog in the distance jumps for a stick and travels 20 feet before landing ! It sorted "men from the boys" as they say, and I noticed a few beach visitors start in this direction then turn back very quickly, but Carol and I were on a mission to get to the far point and the estuary beyond, and it was maybe two miles of beach walk against this headwind. I was blown away [pun intended] by the patterns and tones caused by the sheets of wind-driven sand over the shore, it really was like looking down at the earth whilst flying through low cloud but anything taller than one foot or so remained clear and static, betraying the impression!

  • Wonderful if fleeting sunlight on the pure white sands of Porthmeor Beach St Ives in Cornwall. I’ve always loved the patterns caused by tiny streams and rivulets leaving this steep backed beach but here in mid-winter, it is a beach of promises of things to come, things to look forward to, the thought of which became a shared joy of lovers.

  • Shot whilst being filmed for a French TV channel. I took the crew to Newborough where we discussed my 'Wind Formed' series, looking at the shapes and patterns within the sand caused by effects of the wind. This series started in about 2006. It was almost impossible to create anything worthwhile when a crew requests where to stand and where to look and when to chat but I was happy enough with this grab shot for them to use it within the feature.

  • Dramatic sunlight reflecting off the vast bay of Traeth Coch, (Red Wharf Bay) which at low tide reveals a pattern of sand cusps in the wet sand which reflect the bright sunshine. <br />

Following a specific location request from one of my customers, I found myself (almost) lost outside Llangoed on a warm late summer's afternoon. The sunshine back-lit the leaves of lush overgrown lanes as Cara Dillon sang to me in the front of the van. The hedgerows literally brushed past me as I ventured into narrower and narrower pathways, crows giving buzzards a temporary reprieve as they laughed at my black VW squeezing it's way out towards the bay.<br />
<br />
The shallow beach at extreme low tide creates huge cusps of sand and water, resembling textile designs from the 1960s! The vicious and burning intensity of the light on the retina was not from the sun itself but from it's reflection on the wet sand. Although I tried to compose using peripheral vision I still was left temporarily blinded after shooting some frames.<br />
<br />
Of course the contrast between the sunlit sand and the dry areas surrounding, meant the contrast was of the scale. To me, this was wonderful though, for just as looking towards the light blinded me, I found the fake shadows to be a beautiful and textural contrast, absolutely stunning.

Here at Llanddwyn where the dunes face the endless breeze from the Irish Sea, spectacular circular shapes can be found carved into the sandy hills. The light is characteristic of this area, with dark clouds over the mountains and occasional brilliant sunshine bouncing off the surface of the sea. It’s wild and elemental but always captivating”

A lone walk on a beautiful winters day, from Newborough to Abermenai to relook for Beautiful Silent Danger! It would be nice to say it was just the sound of birdsong and trickling water but an enless drone of planes and unadventurous circling microlights shattered an otherwise magical escape.

There was warmth today, not to the bare human skin but to the heart and soul...Additional info: These huge but isolated walls, stretching across this windy and exposed Welsh mountain top, simply don't meet! One stops on the left, the other starts further up to the right, it's like a massive error of judgement by the wall builders! Why :-)) Beautiful light for this bizarrely abstract landscape though.

  • The advancing tide pushed small wavelets across the expanse of wet sand, smoothing and erasing the signs of the day upon it. For the first time in the year the touch of water on bare flesh was not unpleasant but rather soothing, providing optimism for the summer ahead.<br />
<br />
The gentle slopes of the beach formed wonderful curving wave patterns in the shallow water - and each wave reflected the sunlight at different angles creating a dance of light across the sea surface.

  • ....."The tide was .............. high! Not high enough to drown the caves but high enough to eliminate sand patterns. Hmmm. The light at 6.30 ish was surprisingly bright and high in the sky so I didn't even get the contrast and colours I wanted. I decided instead to enjoy the spring warmth, watch the gentle wavelets and observe the rising tide. I wandered as far out around the headland as I could, scrambling over rocks until I found a fantastic cave, with light at the rear! I ducked down and entered the cave. I discovered another tunnel at 45º joining it at the back, effectively forming a giant torch. I was surprised at the both the intensity of the light, but also the warmth of the light when seen in isolation from the rest of the sky and open landscape. It was very theatrical......"

  • As the sun dropped, giving way to a magenta dusk, I suddenly became aware of a brightening half moon over Snowdonia. The darker became dusk the more brilliant appeared the moon and it shimmered on the retreating tide. <br />
<br />
The shift of colours between the moon-cool blues and the pink after-burn of the sunset was simply beautiful, gently mixed by the ripples from small waves. There was a confusion of colours and patterns yet within it all, a minimalist simplicity of form and composition. I was like a kid in a candy shop.

  • We arrived at the wreck location, as always in Namibia miles from anywhere. It was a beautiful summer morning, the sand so hot you could not walk barefoot. The wind had furrowed the beach into long undulating ripples, and amongst the patterns lay this small remnant of a shipwreck. It was surreal, a vast tract of soft white sand punctured by shards of rusty broken hull. I loved the incongruity of it all.<br />

I shot two frames before out of nowhere a dark Toyota Landcruiser appeared. They could see me photographing but that made no difference. It drove towards me, passengers hanging over the side of the truck, beers in hand, shouting and jeering at me. Their tyre tracks carved up the beautiful white sand surrounding the wreck, ending the shoot there and then. A huge 20 stone fat man sat in an armchair buckled into the rear of the truck; two fat kids and three muscle-bound rednecks pulled faces as their truck circled around to come and carve up even more of the scene I’d been photographing. These were not the sorts of people you’d want to engage with, so I just packed up my camera and without any gestures of annoyance, made my way back to our van.<br />

Thankfully I’d grabbed this frame before the morons arrived but the strange beauty, the vivid sense of history in wilderness, had been ruined for me. Such a shame that wherever you go in the world, there always at least one sad individual ready to spoil thing for others.

  • Amongst a herd of Burchell’s zebra either side of the dust track in Western Etosha (Namibia) two in particular were very frisky, or playful, or cheesed off, because they spent ages jumping up against each other and chasing each other. <br />
<br />
Generally I tend to dismiss the zebra as if they are just domestic farm animals, but when I really look they are fascinating in their colouration and patterns, and when they reared up like in this image I saw them for the first time as striking animals in their own right (pun unavoidable!)

  • I’m always excited, even mesmerised by beach streams that leach from saturated sand banks, carving natural patterns through virginal sand left by an outgoing tide. There were no waves as such, but I was fascinated by the trickling sounds of the running water racing across the foreshore to the retreating sea.

  • In stark contrast to the dark limbs of the tree behind, a mother lays in warm sunshine between shadows of death either side of her. As the earth turns, the shadows slowly move and touch her nakedness but she isn’t perturbed. She is basking in life and she sensuously stretches her body, twisting and turning her torso to match the patterns of light and dark, to savour the sensation of heat against cold, but also to feel the grass and leaves rubbing against her as she does so. This is a mother who conceived her child in the woodland and gave birth in this very clearing, opening her legs, enabling her child to breathe the pure air of this intense new environment, where life and death are natural partners, a wonderful and calm microcosm of the bigger world beyond.

  • ".............I wandered at a slow pace along the water's edge, fascinated by the shifting arrangements of clouds, waves, wet sand and reflections. I loved the balancing act between wave forms, sand patterns and racing cumuli.  A little lady in green wellies marched ahead of me for most of the walk, fortunately leaving only evaporating footprints in the saturated sand. By the time I had reached the arch and a small cove within a beach, the little lady had finished her stroll, turned on her heels and disappeared back in the direction of the sheltered village, leaving me alone to enjoy the unspoilt beach.......'

The thick fog not only enveloped the beautiful Menai Strait, it also flowed deep into the woodland, separating trees and copses into delicate tonal patterns and textures, creating an almost rain-forest like appearance. ..On the way to work that Friday, I couldn't even see the end of our road for thick fog! As I had all my kit with me for a day's studio shooting, I drove via the bridges to see what atmospheric effects might be occurring. Whilst approaching the first lay-by, I saw a beautiful recessional tonal layering of tall trees disappearing into thick fog, almost top-lit by the weak early morning sun. However by the time I'd parked the van the fog has shifted and the recessional effect had reduced, so I walked right down to the edge of the Menai Strait to see whether either of the bridges would show through. This time I had the opposite problem where the fog was so thick I couldn't even see the field alongside me or more than 30 ft out onto the silent Strait. I trudged along a damp, muddy and waterlogged foreshore eventually meandering back up the misty fields to the road. Ironically, from this elevation, higher above the Strait, and with the sun starting to back-light the fog, I enjoyed several stunning variations of view from just a 200 yd stretch of road. The light, sunshine and fog were all dancing across the fast water when regrettably, I had to leave to open the gallery at 10.00 :-(

  • In the same way as many people enjoy jumping and playing in the waves, I also see the waves as playing their own game, dancing in a regular rhythm across the shoreline and crashing against the cliffs. Waves are consistent and have a pattern but each individual wave is subtly different, with thousands of sparks of water shooting off unpredictably. As a metaphor for mankind, we generally dance to the same tune, but as individuals we may fly off in many different directions. Each separate journey makes the main wave look unique and exciting, but almost inevitably, we finally rejoin the main body of water, perhaps just in a slightly different place!

  • As is the way with my days off these days, there is no rush ever. Jan works long days and even longer nights in an intensive care department and there is NO shift pattern at all to allow a person’s body clock to plan the week. Her need for sleep catch up is vital, so I have learned not to expect a 7am leap out of bed, and instead to respect her body clock readjustment time. It doesn’t stop me getting fidgety however if the light looks amazing, and the day is going by :-)<br />

It was Sunday however, and for Jan a rare Sunday off, so whatever! The weather forecast was for brightness, light cloud, zero chance of rain and plenty of sunshine later. We could do a lazy leisurely hill walk later with no worries about the elements or timings. I didn’t really absorb the additional information I skimmed through on the mountain weather forecast though, which indicated freezing level at summits and 45mph winds. Nevertheless we threw in our Paramo’s and Rab wind proofs just in case, along with two flasks of steaming hot coffee.<br />
<br />
At about 2pm we started the one hour drive towards the distinctive pyramid shaped mountain called Cnicht. I haven’t done it for couple of years and I love the mountain (approximately 2200 feet). I have done it from the very meandrous North side and also from the shadowy East facing quarry valley of Cwm Orthin, which was today’s plan as I wanted to show Jan the old quarry workings. However, as part of her prep for some bigger mountains in the next few weeks she said she’d prefer a steep ascent, so we headed for Croesor on the brighter West side instead. This was a first for me too which was nice, making our way up the classic West ridge.<br />
<br />
We decided to have a cuppa and a sandwich in the cafe in the tiny, sleepy hamlet of Croesor but the cafe was so asleep it was closed! I was really surprised, this being the Easter break and a car park packed with walkers’ vehicles. We started up the long, bouldery woodland track before exiting right up towards

  • As is the way with my days off these days, there is no rush ever. Jan works long days and even longer nights in an intensive care department and there is NO shift pattern at all to allow a person’s body clock to plan the week. Her need for sleep catch up is vital, so I have learned not to expect a 7am leap out of bed, and instead to respect her body clock readjustment time. It doesn’t stop me getting fidgety however if the light looks amazing, and the day is going by :-)<br />
<br />
It was Sunday however, and for Jan a rare Sunday off, so whatever! The weather forecast was for brightness, light cloud, zero chance of rain and plenty of sunshine later. We could do a lazy leisurely hill walk later with no worries about the elements or timings. I didn’t really absorb the additional information I skimmed through on the mountain weather forecast though, which indicated freezing level at summits and 45mph winds. Nevertheless we threw in our Paramo’s and Rab wind proofs just in case, along with two flasks of steaming hot coffee.<br />

At about 2pm we started the one hour drive towards the distinctive pyramid shaped mountain called Cnicht. I haven’t done it for couple of years and I love the mountain (approximately 2200 feet). I have done it from the very meandrous North side and also from the shadowy East facing quarry valley of Cwm Orthin, which was today’s plan as I wanted to show Jan the old quarry workings. However, as part of her prep for some bigger mountains in the next few weeks she said she’d prefer a steep ascent, so we headed for Croesor on the brighter West side instead. This was a first for me too which was nice, making our way up the classic West ridge.<br />
<br />
We decided to have a cuppa and a sandwich in the cafe in the tiny, sleepy hamlet of Croesor but the cafe was so asleep it was closed! I was really surprised, this being the Easter break and a car park packed with walkers’ vehicles. We started up the long, bouldery woodland track before exiting right up towards

  • I've been enjoying evenings with my parents lately, when I collect them from their house and we disappear on evening jaunts in my van, usually to the seaside to eat fish & chips and watch the sunset. These evenings have become very important to me as I watch Mum & Dad getting older, and I recognise more than ever that our time is finite, and that people we take for granted (in a nice way) simply won't be there forever. <br />
<br />
As Dad hunted on the shingle beach for wood for his sculptures, my Mum and I were captivated by the simple beauty of light and pattern in the wet sand and sky in front of us. These sorts of landscape pictures are generally too easy to take and very obvious, but this image means more to me than landscape, it was about sharing a vision with my lovely and precious Mum.

  • A hillside tree is sillouetted by dramatic sunlight reflecting off the vast bay of Traeth Coch, (Red Wharf Bay) which at low tide reveals a pattern of sand cusps in the wet sand which reflect the bright sunshine. Small figures at the water's edge on the shoreline show the scale of this beach. <br />
<br />
Following a specific location request from one of my customers, I found myself (almost) lost outside Llangoed on a warm late summer's afternoon. The sunshine back-lit the leaves of lush overgrown lanes as Cara Dillon sang to me in the front of the van. The hedgerows literally brushed past me as I ventured into narrower and narrower pathways, crows giving buzzards a temporary reprieve as they laughed at my black VW squeezing it's way out towards the bay.<br />
<br />
The shallow beach at extreme low tide creates huge cusps of sand and water, resembling textile designs from the 1960s! The vicious and burning intensity of the light on the retina was not from the sun itself but from it's reflection on the wet sand. Although I tried to compose using peripheral vision I still was left temporarily blinded after shooting some frames.<br />
<br />
Of course the contrast between the sunlit sand and the dry areas surrounding, meant the contrast was of the scale. To me, this was wonderful though, for just as looking towards the light blinded me, I found the fake shadows to be a beautiful and textural contrast, absolutely stunning.

  • Away from the burn of the weak sunset over the Irish Sea, campion blew gently in the breeze and colour-matched clouds patterned the delicate sky. It was as if a scene from a Ladybird book, pastel paintings of rural landscape where even the ancient burial mound was a scene of beauty and serenity.

  • What would have been rather gloomy interiors of this old diamond mining town, the most beautiful shards of light from broken rooftops pierced the darkness and patterned the coloured walls. Wind howled at the windows and doors but there was relative calm within the sand-filled dilapidated rooms. It was slightly freaky imagining the conditions for the native workers at the height of the diamond boom there.
