  • Trying to avoid the dozens of snappers rooted on Llanddwyn headland, lenses fixed to the lighthouse, I kept my camera in my bag and just enjoyed the view in other directions. On our way off the island however, I detoured to photograph a pool I’d seen earlier and thankfully was completely alone, until I was noticed that is & suddenly people were literally shooting over my shoulder :-(

  • We trudged through soft wet sand towards the coast, and apart from one couple passing us on their way back to the lane, we found ourselves alone on an empty beach. <br />
<br />
On the retreating tide a tumbling river carved it’s way towards the sea, backlit by the low winter sun.  Waves formed upon the surface and in a surreal moment of observation, they appeared to be flowing back upriver towards the dunes - strangely hypnotic and utterly wonderful.

  • A Curlew stood near motionless at the tip of the reef.  Between jagged arms of rock floated four large seals, only their loud exhalations of breath betraying their position but then unavoidably noticeable.<br />
<br />
As I gingerly navigated the serrated rocky reef I startled an Oystercatcher that then screeched off across the calm sea.  Other than the sounds of wildlife there was just the gentle splash of near-invisible waves around me as I crouched low to photograph the rising full moon. The dark water came in behind me, silently, and my camera and me nearly became part of the sombre depths.

  • The first bitterly cold day on Anglesey this October, yet the sun burned gold and the sky and water reflected the warm hues. Determined dog walkers paced the beach but on the outgoing tide much of the shoreline remained relatively undisturbed, enable the waders to feed in peace and seagulls to rest their wings.

The sunshine on the trees and hedgerows as I swept by in my van was an intoxicating promise of things to come but even as I neared the coast I could see a band of broken cloud on the horizon and a chance of broken promises.<br />
<br />
This is one of a couple of frames from the sand dunes before jogging down to the water’s edge where huge sand pools had formed. I only managed about 3 subtly different frames before the sun dropped behind a layer of dark cloud and the intensity had gone for the night. I count myself lucky nevertheless

  • The rolling silver waves at Porth Nobla carved their way inland, separating the foreground dunes from the spray softened, historic and undulating landscape of West Anglesey. The ancient burial mound of Barclodiad y Gawres lies on the headland, just right of the frame.

  • Although no longer a bird-watcher, it was amazing the number of gulls, ducks and waders which could be seen sheltering on the Malltraeth Estuary. The wind was strong and bitter, even in low afternoon sunlight but the place seems like a haven for everyone and everything on it. The mountains in the background give you some idea of the contrast between the low lying lands of Anglesey and the height of the Cambrian Ranges in the far distance.

  • One of a very short series of images taken whilst I was being filmed being interviewed by Jamie Owen for a BBC Wales documentary series on Welsh Landscape. It was difficult trying to talk and shoot at the same time but the light was so amazing that I couldn't help shooting these four of five frames for real. They have subsequently been filmed for inclusion within the program!

  • An expansive Braint Estuary, Llanddwyn, Isle of Anglesey, at mid tide still exposing acres of sand just a few centimeters below the surface. The sea lies beyond the range of sand dunes in the distance, as do the hills of the Llyn Peninsula and the well known 3 peaks of Yr Eifl on the mainland.

  • Dinas Dinlle is a vast beach beyond Caernarfon Airport. As the tide retreats it leaves a huge inviting expanse of sand, to be enjoyed by everyone and everything from walkers to oystercatchers, until the tide once again makes its long journey back towards the cliffs.

  • A thousand + miles from anywhere, these volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean can create orographic rainclouds at any time of year. However, this plus the warmer climate gives rise to lush vegetaion and spectacular greenery and plant life. Flores means Flowers!

  • On a baking hot day we drove into the sunset across the rugged high cliff tops of West Portugal. Jani sat in the van to call her Mam whilst I wandered down to the rocky cove. As I walked out to the low tide mark, i realised the beach was absolutely massive, miles long to the North and pure sea washed sand. The cliffs looked even higher when looking back at them. The day as usual had been clear blue cloudless sky, so it was an extra bonus to see delicate clouds gently sliding Southwards across the horizon. I had the whole beach to myself and was in seventh Heaven. <br />
<br />
However, when i turned to walk back to the car I noticed a young man curled up against the cliffs, clutching a beer bottle and looking most melancholy. I know that when I go into my dark patches, the beach becomes my salvation, my escape and my remedy - I empathised with this guy who had come miles to see the sunset on this spectacular and deserted coast.

  • And so it was, at about 4.00 pm, I headed for the West Coast of Anglesey, as usual, to catch the dipping sun. I turned up at one of my favourite spots and ambled, totally arbitrarily along the shoreline, enjoying the water, the sounds, the heat and colours of the warm sun and the glistening rocks emerging from the receding tide. Funnily enough, the stark sunshine, at this time of day, at least creates strong shadows, long shadows and sparkling sea tops. As it sank lower the colours intensified further and amazing hues resulted, almost, but not quite unbelievable.

  • A short walk yesterday evening to catch the last of the light, whilst trying to avoid rain showers. The wind was strong and chilling but the colours behind the rainstorm were wonderfully warm.

  • Just a few days to go until Wales finds some sort of normality before the next national lockdown! The weather seems to be reflecting my / our moods at present, one minute dark clouds, rain and even hail, but the next, glorious sunshine and even a hint of warmth on your wet face. Shallow pools seemed deep and menacing but upon the surface glowed patches of clean sunlight. These rippling islands of gentle light reminded me that the sun will keep on rising and falling despite everything, and that life goes on, with or without us.

  • When the magical, and literally 'awesome' moments of sunset mirror in virginal wet sand, it’s quite genuinely hard to beat. Double the beauty, double the drama, double the emotional response. It's just a beach, the sea and a ball of gas, so why is it that we as humans are so drawn to these simple elements when combined?

  • After weeks of dull wet weather during a British summer, the sun burned brilliantly today, and I could see clearly into the crystal sparkling light - everything seemed perfect from companionship to warm seas.

  • A Monday evening. I'd gone out to catch some surf but it was seriously blown out in some very heavy gales and was just mush, so I took some shots instead :-) The very low evening sunlight was blitzing the coast with an amazing intensity, as powerful in it's own way as the pounding waves. Where the waves were smashing over this set of rocks the plumes of spray were being backlit turning them a rich orange/gold. However, as you can see from the foreground I was basically IN the sea, with no tripod so for the first time in my memory, I have deliberately cropped the original a little to show just the bits I wanted. Theoretically it would have been easier for me to change lens but the sea spray was so intense that I didn't fancy a £5K sensor covered in salt water - so there you go, probably my first ever forced crop! :-((((

  • It was strange studying this tiny gap in the rock, as the rising tide funnelled wave after wave into a beautful seawater fan. I just got to thinking that no matter what barriers are put up, powerful forces are unstoppable, its only ever a question of time.

  • Another of those awful, dreary, wet grey days with hours and hours of rain, then suddenly at the end of the day, a gentle orange glow built on the horizon, a sign of magic for distant strangers.  We stuck it in a high gear and made for the brightening sky, sunshine gradually warming the interior of the van through the salt-smeared windscreen. <br />
<br />
On arrival, the wind was really strong and the sand was lifting and blowing across the beach. I headed for the shoreline where the breeze tried to do the same with sheet water. The sand was soaking and it reflected the scudding painted clouds on its surface. This was  another of my open-air theatre moments were scenes were changing by the second. I watched it until my feet sank and the sun disappeared, leaving nothing but happiness in the dark.

  • We decided to ignore the warnings not to drive during Storm Ciara, and headed for the sea. The narrow coastal roads were covered in seaweed and pebbles but high up above the cliffs of South Stack we only had the gale force winds to contend with. I left Jani warm in the van and fought my way down to the cliff edge, thankfully the wind blew me onshore not off! On arrival the skies were dark and gloomy but as I set up the tripod, sunlight burst through a break in the clouds and illuminated the short grasses clinging to the siltstone & quartzite rocks around me. <br />
<br />
I had to lean hard onto the tripod just to try and keep the camera still enough to make the shot. Even then I decided on a higher ISO for safety. Almost as soon as the sun warmed my wind-blown face, it disappeared and I was blown uphill back to the van!

  • After a brilliant afternoon of rock climbing with Jani and her daughter, we were all buzzing with excitement. The weather had been dreary most of the day, but after Sioned and her man had sadly boarded the train back to Liverpool, Jani and I didn’t want the day to end. We first went to Trwyn Du to see the famous lighthouse but there were far too many noisy people there to enjoy, so we headed for the expansive bay of Traeth Coch and were lucky enough to see this spectacular view. At this time of year the sun sets much further to the right, illuminating the sand cusps along the vast beach.

  • An ocean swell only shows it's energy as it reaches the shoreline and wraps around a swimming platform on the shore of Playa Blanca in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. The aquamarine sea is crystal clear and you can see the reef beneath. Lobos Island and Fuerteventura can be see on on the horizon.

  • Shot from the mountains of Tre’r Ceiri, higher than the low scudding clouds, sunlight and shadows created a thousand paintings upon the vast stretch of the Irish Sea. <br />
<br />
From here, over 2000 years ago, tribes who inhabited the Iron Age settlement behind me will have see such similar views. I have no idea what they will have seen ‘in’ those views, or whether the magical beauty I see was more ominous to them. Sitting in the warm sunlight on the summit of Garn Canol however, I’d like to think that they also saw the amazing beauty in nature’s elements.

  • August, the holidays in full swing. The sun is clear in the sky and the sand is warm. I walk barefoot through deep pools on the beach and it’s like standing in a bath. There is something about shimmering water that mesmerises me, and I wish the still photo could show that iridescence

  • In a streaming gale Jan and I crossed sand dunes to an almost deserted foam-strewn beach. The waves were heavy and fast and the wind was lifting and hurling foam creatures from the shoreline to the dunes, only avoiding splattering our faces thanks to slipstreaming! The sunlight was broken but when it burst through it was warm and rich, sparkling off the wet sand, backlighting oxygenated suds, waddling their way from the water margin. It was a bitterly cold air-stream sweeping down from the North, and poor Jan looked like a frozen rigid Chilli pepper in her new Paramo coat as I stumbled around on wave-soaked reefs. I was excited by the events in front of me but was ever conscious of my suffering slim companion. The spray was constant and when I looked towards the ancient burial chamber of Barclodiad y Gawres I could see horizontal sheets of spray contrasting with the brooding dark hillside. My lens was covered in spray within seconds and the thickness of salt meant that even specialist lens cloths were not effective at clearing off the saline coating - I accepted that today’s shots would be soft and droplet covered, and actually that no longer worries me these days, as atmosphere always beats detail. I balanced myself on a rock jutting from the pristine sand, ready to shoot the choppy sea but today again, I got caught out by one of those ‘tricksy’ seventh waves, which lifted to knee height which was already 18” above the beach, so this time I did get a boot-full of seawater but also a fun shot in the process - no award winner for sure but a great memory of a moment which had Jan laughing widely, even in her sub zero state :-)We walked on, my boot warming like a winter wetsuit and as I was already wet I resigned myself to further soakings as I haunched just an inch above wet sand to photograph a parade of the foamy suds. Finally we stood atop an isolated black crag in the center of this long sandy beach and we watched larger waves exploding over the offshore s

  • Snip from blog: "As the light dropped even lower, and I realised my new Petzl head-torch might be used for real for the first time, low level contrasts and longish exposures actually ignited some interest in me, and I even had fun deliberately using my head-torch light on the dark foreground waters. This light was my mark - my signature that I was there, fighting to show my existence in an advancing nothingness. I saw this as a metaphor, in that sometimes there is a necessity to make one's light shine, no matter how incongruous, in the never-ending global story of repetition, emulation and predictability :-)"

  • From a short series of images taken after a very wet rainy day. I had gone to the beach anyway and started walking in the drizzle just to get fresh air. I played with my iPhone taking numerous fun pictures with some on-board software but as I was playing, the skies broke a little, and holes of daylight swept past, briefly and teasingly but the effect on the wet sands was awesome. The rain had meant most visitors had stayed away even the dreaded dog walkers and their sand destroying pooches ! I was alone and totally in the zone.   • I’ve been looking at the work of some American photographers from the turn of the 20th century. I absoloutely loved their obsession with shadows, lighting and of course, B&W. It reminded me very much of my earliest work when I started out in the late 70s and then art school in the 80s. . <br />
<br />
So looking at this images I shot recently, I decided to once again enjoy the sheer liberation of monochrome and the freedom of playing with drama of light and shadows

  • It’s that time of year, and although I thoroughly dislike short days, darkness, rain and gloom, Autumn is also the season of warm water, warm gales, warm sunshine and incredible drama. If we could arrange to keep winter for just a month or so, I’d be very happy, but I’m trying to enjoy the most of the last vestiges of what was summer.

  • Chaotic weather and stormy conditions over the west coast of Ynys Môn this evening, this summer! One minute, torrential downpours the next, blazing hot sunshine - utterly unpredictable other than for its unpredictability.<br />
<br />
Holyhead Mountain can be seen in the far distance whilst fast-appearing crepuscular rays scan the surface of the Irish Sea as the clouds race inland. It was wind-blown and spectacular and I revelled in the elements

  • I do love silence, well, silence from human noise at least. This evening was so quiet that I could hear the almost imperceptible sound of the rising tide creeping up the shoreline, spilling into tiny ripples in the sand banks and flooding into small sand pools. As often here on the Afon Menai, I could hear the isolated sounds of two waders, a solitary Oystercatcher flitting over the surface of the strait, and a Curlew feeding on the rapidly disappearing shoreline.<br />

It was yet another dull summer day, wind, rain and eventually a heavy, deadening mizzle, and yet there was also a delicate beauty about the subtly changing scene. The grey sky-blanket wasn't really solid, but an ever-morphing backdrop of monochromatic tones, more like a vaporous dance of silks on a washing line.<br />

Once again I sheltered under a huge brolly, a dark, warm cove of protection from the elements racing in from the open sea to the West. The landscape became a view, separated from me until I lowered the brolly and felt the full effect of wind-blown rain on my face, smacking me back to reality. It was hard to believe such a pastel scene could exist within the wintry elements all about.

  • Arriving at South Stack the cloud cover was much more extensive than I'd expected and as evening drew close, only a distant burn of weak sunset behind miles of rain, made any form of feature. Somehow though, the whole thing felt beautifully balanced because of it.

  • I arrived at the beach in pouring rain but decided to head out anyway, brolly in hand. Thankfully the rain stopped suddenly and large breaks appeared in the huge blankets of grey cloud. The low sun painted colour onto the clouds behind me and I felt uplifted by brighter conditions. And then the first drops of rain fixed themselves to my lens and within less than a minute the heavens opened once again. I sheltered under the brolly for a short while, revelling in the elements around me before battling a squall back to the van.

  • After two amazing days of rock climbing in near 20º sunshine here in North Wales, I found myself walking on Llanddwyn Beach after work today, revelling in the unusual weather conditions. If global warming meant more lovely days like this all year round, with no negative impacts, I’d say bring it on!!<br />

  • For such a brief opportunity to get to the coast this evening, the conditions certainly delivered and I was blessed with solitude as well. <br />
<br />
As the sun dropped, giving way to a magenta dusk, I suddenly became aware of a brightening half moon over Snowdonia. The darker became dusk the more brilliant appeared the moon and it shimmered on the retreating tide. What really made this image work for me were the gentle curves of small waves pushing over a sand bank. As in my image “Wind Formed 4”, this was perfect geometry in nature, and I was utterly captivated and found it very hard to leave.

  • Shot on my new Sony A7R2. Confident washes of strong wind waves powered up the beach even on the outgoing tide during a darkening dusk.<br />

The skies looked dramatic, numerous clouds being blown rapidly in a strong breeze. The air was cold enough to warrant a winter coat, but anticipating some tidal shots I wore shorts to the beach. As I stood in the sea to make more images I was surprised at how warm the waves were as they wrapped around my legs.

The skies looked dramatic, numerous clouds being blown rapidly in a strong breeze. The air was cold enough to warrant a winter coat, but anticipating some tidal shots I wore shorts to the beach. As I stood in the sea to make more images I was surprised at how warm the waves were as they wrapped around my legs.

  • Testing out a Sony A7R2 against the Fuji. The sharpness, detail and separation in darker tones are a marked improvement over the Fuji. However the camera profiles from the Sony and very crude compared with the subtle differences between the Fuji ‘scene’ profiles. There are some slightly strange colour shifts in tonal values using ‘Camera Standard’ in Adobe Camera Raw that I need to get to the bottom of. I’ve only had the camera out for a few hours and this is my first go at processing a Sony file in ACR which is my preferred workflow

  • I've been enjoying evenings with my parents lately, when I collect them from their house and we disappear on evening jaunts in my van, usually to the seaside to eat fish & chips and watch the sunset. These evenings have become very important to me as I watch Mum & Dad getting older, and I recognise more than ever that our time is finite, and that people we take for granted (in a nice way) simply won't be there forever. <br />
<br />
As Dad hunted on the shingle beach for wood for his sculptures, my Mum and I were captivated by the simple beauty of light and pattern in the wet sand and sky in front of us. These sorts of landscape pictures are generally too easy to take and very obvious, but this image means more to me than landscape, it was about sharing a vision with my lovely and precious Mum.

  • Almost Spielberg-like, the most incredible dark clouds built above a small cluster of beachside houses at Rhosneigr. Late afternoon sunlight burst under the weather front illuminating the coastline, increasing the drama further.

  • The advancing tide pushed small wavelets across the expanse of wet sand, smoothing and erasing the signs of the day upon it. For the first time in the year the touch of water on bare flesh was not unpleasant but rather soothing, providing optimism for the summer ahead.<br />
<br />
The gentle slopes of the beach formed wonderful curving wave patterns in the shallow water - and each wave reflected the sunlight at different angles creating a dance of light across the sea surface.

  • This was a handheld snap on the way home from the pub after celebrating my Mum’s birthday. When you look at scenes like this, it makes you realise just how damned lucky we are to live in such an incredible place.

  • By the time my student and I had reached the coast I thought we’d lost the light, but as we walked out onto the estuary the sun, which had eased behind a massive cloud bank, gradually dropped further and re-appeared, highlighting waves of higher cloud beyond the darker blanket beneath. It was a superb finish to a very full 14 hour 1-1 workshop.

  • An apparition of Archangel St Michael witnessed by fisherman in 495 led to a monastery being built here. After the Norman Conquest, the abbey was granted to the Benedictine monks of Mont St Michel in France & through the Middle Ages the Mount became a major pilgrimage destination. 4 miracles are said to have happened here between 1262 & 1263. The mount was eventually seized by Henry V111 & became a royal stronghold. Now owned by Lord St Levan

  • One of a very short series of images taken whilst I was being filmed being interviewed by Jamie Owen for a BBC Wales documentary series on Welsh Landscape. It was difficult trying to talk and shoot at the same time but the light was so amazing that I couldn't help shooting these four of five frames for real. They have subsequently been filmed for inclusion within the program!

  • In a streaming gale Jan and I crossed sand dunes to an almost deserted foam-strewn beach. The waves were heavy and fast and the wind was lifting and hurling foam creatures from the shoreline to the dunes, only avoiding splattering our faces thanks to slipstreaming! The sunlight was broken but when it burst through it was warm and rich, sparkling off the wet sand, backlighting oxygenated suds, waddling their way from the water margin. It was a bitterly cold air-stream sweeping down from the North, and poor Jan looked like a frozen rigid Chilli pepper in her new Paramo coat as I stumbled around on wave-soaked reefs. I was excited by the events in front of me but was ever conscious of my suffering slim companion. The spray was constant and when I looked towards the ancient burial chamber of Barclodiad y Gawres I could see horizontal sheets of spray contrasting with the brooding dark hillside. My lens was covered in spray within seconds and the thickness of salt meant that even specialist lens cloths were not effective at clearing off the saline coating - I accepted that today’s shots would be soft and droplet covered, and actually that no longer worries me these days, as atmosphere always beats detail. I balanced myself on a rock jutting from the pristine sand, ready to shoot the choppy sea but today again, I got caught out by one of those ‘tricksy’ seventh waves, which lifted to knee height which was already 18” above the beach, so this time I did get a boot-full of seawater but also a fun shot in the process - no award winner for sure but a great memory of a moment which had Jan laughing widely, even in her sub zero state :-)We walked on, my boot warming like a winter wetsuit and as I was already wet I resigned myself to further soakings as I haunched just an inch above wet sand to photograph a parade of the foamy suds. Finally we stood atop an isolated black crag in the center of this long sandy beach and we watched larger waves exploding over the offshore s

  • There was one particular location which seemed to be ‘going off’ in surfers terms anyway, a point where even the smallish waves were still powerful enough to slam the small cliff buttresses and send spray skyward, but this same spray was voluminous and very wetting and in itself is problematic for photography as the lens gets covered in seconds not minutes, and in this light every drop on your lens becomes a backlit orb ! I studied the short reef in front of me and calculated where the waves would cover, finding a dry pinnacle on which to set my tripod, an item of equipment that was imperative today. I stood smugly on my dry fortress and waited for the waves and light to work together and shot perhaps four frames of waves I thought would deliver the results foreground and background but then a white wall started to approach me ! My guts revolved as one exceptional wave stood out from the sets and it came from a different angle too. The speed seemed faster than the rest - it wasn’t - but in my fear it was ! There was nothing I could do but brace myself as it rose up over the rocks and simply pushed past me like a mini Tsunami reaching my thighs!!!! The force was strong [Luke !] but the tripod and my legs remained firm against the push and thank God, because if not I would have fallen backwards into a small gully and whilst I would not have drowned I would likely as not have injured myself and lost £10K of camera gear ! The wave exploded in laughter as it died in the shore and the next waves smiled at me as they strolled past. Thing is, I got the shot boy ! :-) MY Paramo Cascada trousers and my Asolo mountain boots meant that incredibly, I didn’t get wet at all, I could have been wearing a wetsuit !

  • Amazing light on Broad Beach, Rhosneigr, West Anglesey, Wales. There is a river that runs from Maelog Lake (Llyn Maelog) cutting through the sand dunes and out onto the open beach, forming numerous tributary streams before finally joining the Irish Sea
