  • Lockdown South Africa - Day 11<br />
<br />
Today it just pi**ed it down all day, never seen such rain over here, and it reflected my general mood and lowness. After the heaviest rain eased I went out into the garden for fresh air, no real hope or intension of taking pictures. This gorgeous, sumptuous hibiscus tree looked beautiful even in the rain, but is is gently losing its flowers. I fear I won’t see my captivating, flitting Sunbird much longer, with its long proboscis beak, vibrant emerald back and blood red bib.

  • From above, and in the natural serenity of recent snow, Tŷ Uchaf farmhouse looks beautiful, normal and inhabited, no longer the empty shell for sheep droppings, birds of prey and an occasional dead lamb. At one point in time I can imagine this farm could have been a very striking place to live and work, with stunning views, but the isolation, loneliness and hardship of tending livestock in this difficult valley, and getting them to market, could also have been just seriously hard work!

I’ve always been fascinated by traditional Welsh slate fencing. It’s sadly a dying tradition these days, if not dead already, but every now and then you come across these magnificent structures, brilliant as they reflect the sunlight from their smooth, sentinel faces.

  • I was the last on the hill, and the sun disappeared behind a huge bank of cloud, dulling the light completely. I watched a snowboarder carve his way down the soft snowy hillside away from me, quietly feeling the isolation, when a gentle hint of colour appeared over Snowdon. I stood for a few minutes, now completely alone, and then the light intensified and the whole landscape was bathed in the most glorious colours. The summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) appeared after two hours of waiting, so I trudged back up through thick snow to the summit of my own little hill and became quite ecstatic about everything that was happening. I was smiling from ear to ear, not even knowing where to look as it was all so beautiful, and then tears started rolling down my cheeks and I began to cry! I believe it was both the spiritual and mental joy of the situation but also an intense feeling of peace and freedom that many of us deeply crave to keep our sanity.

  • After the harshness of the crags and cliff sides, the angular edges of the quarried levels and the tidy angles of the village itself, these large and beautifully rounded boulders seemed almost organic, and the way they spaced themselves evenly across the fine pebbles of the beach gave them a lifelike character of their own. It was hard to resist simply running my hands over the beautiful smooth curves, much as you would with a Henry Moore sculpture.

  • Stunning views over Langebaan Lagoon in the West Coast National Park on the West Coast of Africa. The crags were quite surreal and quite beautiful, sculptural even. I rarely photograph people but in this case using Jani in the shot really did help with a sense of scale.

  • An icy cold but beautiful day in the snowy mountains of the lower Carneddau. The walk which we planned to finish in 5 hours had to be shortened drastically as thick snowdrifts made progress unbelievably slow. We cut out two peaks just below the summits, to save time, but still ended up on dangerous unconsolidated snow which hid treacherous ankle snapping sinks into streams below, as we headed down into the Aber valley in near darkness. Lessons to be learned for sure.

  • Dinas Dinlle is a vast beach beyond Caernarfon Airport. As the tide retreats it leaves a huge inviting expanse of sand, to be enjoyed by everyone and everything from walkers to oystercatchers, until the tide once again makes its long journey back towards the cliffs.

  • I have to be honest, I normally steer well clear of Trearddur, normally populated by hundreds of beachgoers, jet-skis, power boats, 4x4s on the sand, boat trailers and sailing dinghies. The small bay is surrounded on all sides by a hotchpotch of architecture, some interesting, some ghastly, but either way is not a place of peace, tranquility and natural landscape that I normally seek for my imagery.<br />

However, during this lockdown I was able to witness a little bit of history, for even on this beautiful blue-sky day there were only a dozen people on the whole beach, and most kept close to the promenade. For the short period of time I was there, looking to create new images for a loyal customer, I had a small sense of how lovely the bay itself actually is, without the crowds. Long foamy pulses of Irish Sea waves pushed themselves up the broad sandy shore, licking their way around the stumps of petrified forest that I'd never seen before and never knew existed.<br />

In the distance a dog walker wandered into the burning light and the call of oystercatchers could be heard over the sound of the waves. The virgin sand was mostly unspoiled by footprints and if it were not for the urban skyline I could have imagined myself on an ancient beach, nothing more than a stretch of coastline where the beautiful predictability of high & low tide were all that mattered in the world.

A lone walk on a beautiful winters day, from Newborough to Abermenai to relook for Beautiful Silent Danger! It would be nice to say it was just the sound of birdsong and trickling water but an enless drone of planes and unadventurous circling microlights shattered an otherwise magical escape.

  • The thick fog not only enveloped the beautiful Menai Strait, it also flowed deep into the woodland, separating trees and copses into delicate tonal patterns and textures, creating an almost rain-forest like appearance. <br />
<br />
On the way to work that Friday, I couldn't even see the end of our road for thick fog! As I had all my kit with me for a day's studio shooting, I drove via the bridges to see what atmospheric effects might be occurring. Whilst approaching the first lay-by, I saw a beautiful recessional tonal layering of tall trees disappearing into thick fog, almost top-lit by the weak early morning sun. However by the time I'd parked the van the fog has shifted and the recessional effect had reduced, so I walked right down to the edge of the Menai Strait to see whether either of the bridges would show through. This time I had the opposite problem where the fog was so thick I couldn't even see the field alongside me or more than 30 ft out onto the silent Strait. I trudged along a damp, muddy and waterlogged foreshore eventually meandering back up the misty fields to the road. Ironically, from this elevation, higher above the Strait, and with the sun starting to back-light the fog, I enjoyed several stunning variations of view from just a 200 yd stretch of road. The light, sunshine and fog were all dancing across the fast water when regrettably, I had to leave to open the gallery at 10.00 :-(

  • A delicate girl perches bird-like in the arms of an old tree.<br />
<br />
She never really knew her mother, tragically torn away from her when she was no more than a baby.  But in a way, her mother still exists within every breath of her beautiful daughter. They were always connected; the blood and genes still flow and will continue to do so as mother becomes grandmother and daughter becomes mother.<br />
<br />
The strength of the tree is as much in its roots as its wide trunk and thick branches. Even though twigs will break off and beautiful leaves fall to earth, the lifeline continues. The tree appears similar, even after the wonder of a million new leaves but that same original life flows into every one.<br />
<br />
She likes it here, even in the bare nakedness of the tree’s winter form. She understands time. She can feel life beneath her feet and soon she will feel life within her womb. She knows that despite appearances, life goes on and her mother is always with her.
    In Mothers Hands
  • We arrived at the wreck location, as always in Namibia miles from anywhere. It was a beautiful summer morning, the sand so hot you could not walk barefoot. The wind had furrowed the beach into long undulating ripples, and amongst the patterns lay this small remnant of a shipwreck. It was surreal, a vast tract of soft white sand punctured by shards of rusty broken hull. I loved the incongruity of it all.<br />
.<br />
I shot two frames before out of nowhere a dark Toyota Landcruiser appeared. They could see me photographing but that made no difference. It drove towards me, passengers hanging over the side of the truck, beers in hand, shouting and jeering at me. Their tyre tracks carved up the beautiful white sand surrounding the wreck, ending the shoot there and then. A huge 20 stone fat man sat in an armchair buckled into the rear of the truck; two fat kids and three muscle-bound rednecks pulled faces as their truck circled around to come and carve up even more of the scene I’d been photographing. These were not the sorts of people you’d want to engage with, so I just packed up my camera and without any gestures of annoyance, made my way back to our van.<br />

Thankfully I’d grabbed this frame before the morons arrived but the strange beauty, the vivid sense of history in wilderness, had been ruined for me. Such a shame that wherever you go in the world, there always at least one sad individual ready to spoil thing for others.

Since 2011 photographer Glyn Davies has spent much of his personal time photographically exploring the relationship between nude human figures and the ‘notional’ natural landscape.<br />
<br />
The nude in landscape is nothing new as a genre, but Glyn wanted to create images with a subtly different emphasis. Nudes in landscape are often about the beauty or pose of extremely beautiful professional models, and without the model there is sometimes nothing left. As a landscape photographer Glyn wanted the landscape to be as important as the nude itself, and the figure had to have a relevant connection to that landscape.<br />
<br />
The subjects were not professional models but volunteers who had shown an interest in the concept. As the project developed it clearly confirmed that there is an important sensuous, sometimes sensual connection between a naked person and their environment, an empowering connection generally prevented by or concealed when wearing clothes.<br />
<br />
Almost without exception the volunteers found the experience to be life affirming and liberating. For many this was the first time that they had felt completely at one with the earth.<br />

  • A stream cuts down the beach to reach the door, carving beautiful curves through virgin sand. Black clouds stall overhead and light levels dropped dramatically, yet, there was a sombre beauty in this endlessly fascinating stretch of coast, regardless of weather.

  • Having done a picture delivery in Northern Anglesey, I was on my way back down the A55 when I decided to turn for the coast, just to get some fresh air. I found myself on the Rhosneigr road and my heart was light. Mine was the only vehicle in the sand-dune car park and pools of rainwater transformed the normally gritty rutted surface into rather beautiful patches of bright sky.The wind was bitter, still blowing in from the North West and today I only had trainers on, so no risky teetering about on wave washed rocks for me.<br />
<br />
The recent gales and big tides had deposited tonnes of dead brown seaweed over most of the shelving beach, but the outgoing tide revealed a beautiful sandy stretch at low water mark. The waves had decreased considerably today but it was still choppy in the strong cold breeze and the waves though low, were still powerful enough to launch themselves explosively up the shingle. Yesterday in the blazing late afternoon light, there was a smoothness to the foam-covered beach but today, there was sharpness, a contrast and a new brooding weather front overhead. My fingers froze whenever I removed them from my shooters-mitts and I put two hoods on to keep my head warm. I negotiated my way up onto the reef via a series of bizarre-to watch, core-stabilised ballet movements, tripod over my shoulder and rucksack swaying heavily with each leap. I found somewhere I could stand securely and just watched the wave performance below me. <br />
<br />
The sunshine remained clear and intense for quite a while, even though the cloud front appeared keen to obscure it, and the light danced on the waves in a bright avenue ahead of me. Soon though, the light subdued and the rain started so I made my way back to the van and on to the gallery to work. I really enjoy these spontaneous moments when you find yourself excited and stimulated by someone or something unexpected. I felt alive and captivated, if only for a brief hour.

  • It’s a strange feeling for me at Nant, the constant opposites of so many things. It may be, of course, that it’s just my way of seeing any place, but I knew that after the beautiful sunset had disappeared, I would have to find my way back across the rocky mountain top, pick my way really carefully through a dense and seriously dark pine wood before reaching the road. The village would be empty on my return and every window would be black, with open curtains. The warm and universal beauty of the sunset was always countered by the approach of the cold and the dark.

  • As Storm Imogen makes her first appearance, and dark clouds build on the the horizon, I find myself fascinated by the sheer variety of beautiful coloured stones lying just beneath the surface of the sand pools before an incoming tide. The weather created dreary conditions but every so often gentle glimmers of light illuminated this wet world, a world that has seen rain for almost three months solid. It was so lovely to find such intriguing beauty in such inclement weather

  • So strange seeing popular places near deserted, and equally so beautiful and calming - no excited shouting, screaming kids, dog-calling, drones, lines of people on a mission to honey pots locations and a deserted lighthouse. I imagined that going back 40 years or more, maybe this was the norm, that you’d only ever see a handful of people the whole walk? The landscape felt different. It felt more wild, more desolate, more natural, more timeless, more spiritual. <br />
<br />
I guess to find this sort of calm solitude; refreshing mental freedom; we’d have to travel much further afield. Anglesey is now a playground for so many, even mid winter, and whilst it’s always beautiful, it’s rare to find solitude. For many they don’t mind, they even seek the comfort of other people being around, but for me I need total solitude - I need to experience places without seeing anyone - it’s the only way I can allow my mind to connect properly with the planet.

  • When I was younger and in college, I had two beautiful classmates, Identical twins. They were bright, talented and set for brilliant things, but before they could, one went for a swim here and got pulled into the rip tide. The other twin went to save her. Both were pulled far out to sea and both lost their lives. Their deaths stunned the whole community. The sea is so beautiful but so powerful and is easily underestimated.

  • This was one of those beautiful mornings with clear, low light and stunning saturation of colour. I had walked with my friend (and book producer), Jonathan, up to the top levels on the Trefor side of the valley to get a view back down at Y Nant. The sea appeared crystal clear and almost tropical in colour whilst the sunshine just ‘clipped’ over the steep quarried hillside to differentiate the levels. With the village nestling in centre frame, this image, along with its sister image, ‘A Different Level of Amazement’, used on Carl Clowes’ guide book cover, epitomises the full layout and topography of the place, showing it in all its glory – however, for most of my visits,the weather and atmosphere were altogether moodier, and in a way more dramatic and impressive. In this glorious weather it was easier to forget the mists of the past whilst revelling in the warmth and beauty of the present.

  • A beautifully soft and rounded mountain landscape, grass covered and sensual. Amidst this gentlying blowing softness hard, prominent man made walls graphically divided the landscape. There was warmth today, not to the bare human skin but to the heart and soul...Additional info: These huge but isolated walls, stretching across this windy and exposed Welsh mountain top, simply don't meet! One stops on the left, the other starts further up to the right, it's like a massive error of judgement by the wall builders! Why :-)) Beautiful light for this bizarrely abstract landscape though.

  • In this lonely valley nestles a large but often calm lake. Reeds puncture the glassy smooth surface and there is silence, apart from the occasional bleating of Welsh mountain sheep, or the call of a raven over the hillsides. This woman is so bird-like in stature, so graceful and so slim, that she reminds me of the heron which frequents this place. She delicately points each foot into the lake so as not to overly disturb its surface and even in the act of doing this mimics the beautiful creature. She turns to face the light, her front feeling the gentle warmth of the afternoon sun, as the cold water clasps her legs. She stands motionless, embracing these sensations as I watch her.

Innocence in a dark world where being nude outdoors is seen as sinful. That fact that she was conceived by two naked people; born into the world naked, from her mother’s naked body seemed not to have a bearing on her freedom to enjoy this most natural state. As a young child she would run carefree on the open beach, delighting in not having to wear clothes. She saw other children happily playing naked there, equally without sin - just joyful, smiling and friendly - all enjoying an intimate natural connection to the amazing world that they had been introduced to.<br />
<br />
But as her body developed and her breasts grew, she was expected to cover up. The world now saw immorality in her naked maturity; her nudity became frowned upon; people couldn’t bear to acknowledge her new sexuality or even gaze upon her natural form, fearful of their own sexual confusion and self-control. Her beautiful body must always be covered up, never revealed to others. The incredible and life affirming experience of being naked outdoors had become dirty and immoral – both her body and her real character were now hidden.<br />
<br />
Up here on a hillside however, a bright light appeared, slowly burning through the heavy clouds and she found herself nude. She felt the short grass beneath her feet and gentle sunshine on her back as she stretched her naked body once more, revealing herself completely to the earth, the sky and the elements. She stood on tiptoes, aching to be lifted upwards. She wanted to show the world that she was still alive, still innocent, even in her naked form. There was a discernible aura around this woman and I sensed her natural existence had just been spiritually validated.

  • A hillside tree is sillouetted by dramatic sunlight reflecting off the vast bay of Traeth Coch, (Red Wharf Bay) which at low tide reveals a pattern of sand cusps in the wet sand which reflect the bright sunshine. Small figures at the water's edge on the shoreline show the scale of this beach. <br />

Following a specific location request from one of my customers, I found myself (almost) lost outside Llangoed on a warm late summer's afternoon. The sunshine back-lit the leaves of lush overgrown lanes as Cara Dillon sang to me in the front of the van. The hedgerows literally brushed past me as I ventured into narrower and narrower pathways, crows giving buzzards a temporary reprieve as they laughed at my black VW squeezing it's way out towards the bay.<br />
<br />
The shallow beach at extreme low tide creates huge cusps of sand and water, resembling textile designs from the 1960s! The vicious and burning intensity of the light on the retina was not from the sun itself but from it's reflection on the wet sand. Although I tried to compose using peripheral vision I still was left temporarily blinded after shooting some frames.<br />
<br />
Of course the contrast between the sunlit sand and the dry areas surrounding, meant the contrast was of the scale. To me, this was wonderful though, for just as looking towards the light blinded me, I found the fake shadows to be a beautiful and textural contrast, absolutely stunning.

  • A beautiful and tumbling waterfall on the lower stretch of the Afon Llan, alongside the Watkin Path up Snowdon. The river forms deep pools in the smooth eroded rock, and the clarity is just incredible. The lush wide valley of Nant Gwynant can be seen in the distance.

<br />
Having been stranded in South Africa during the worst pandemic in a century, when poverty and related crime become as potentially dangerous as the virus itself, we were finally evacuated back to the UK by a British Government plane. We are so relieved to be back on Welsh soil, and to have the relative freedom to walk out of our front gates, something denied to us for more than three weeks in locked down South Africa.<br />
<br />
We did a lovely walk today to try and regenerate ourselves and it was Heaven. We met several wonderful friends along the way, whom from several meters away, we were able to enjoy chatting with, revelling in human communication with others, again something denied during a total lockdown in South Africa.<br />
<br />
We ended the walk via the Belgian Prom and honestly, Telford’s Bridge has never looked so solid, so magnificent, so secure, so timeless, so beautiful. That bridge has seen wars and diseases and big cultural changes, and it’s outlived us all. It was familiar, it was welcoming, it was reassuring and ‘normal’. Watching the tide roaring between the arches was mesmerising and levelling. We will have lost so many people to this awful, society and world changing disease, but the planet will keep on spinning, the tide will keep on turning and the sun will keep on shining regardless.<br />

As I worry beyond all worry, about my Jani walking into a dangerous zone in the local hospital on a regular basis, and potentially bringing the danger home as well, I desperately try to remember that we all die eventually anyway, but that ‘life‘ will go on. It’s all a matter of time but I really don’t want anyone I love to go just yet.

It seemed incongrous, almost a layer seperate from the rest, but to me it seemed particularly special as I chatted about it with this amazing, creative woman who gave me life 52 years ago.

  • Although it looks like a beautiful Summer’s evening, this picture was taken one February and five minutes after this scene, a thick, heavy and freezing fog swirled in from the sea and I could hardly see in front of me.   The upside to winter photography is that you have the beach to yourself; undisturbed sand and the chance to immerse yourself in the sensory joys of simply ‘being’ and becoming enraptured by the drama of nature.

  • One minute the summit of Elidir Fawr was bathed in early Spring sunshine and the next the sky had darkened and freezing vapour engulfed us. However the rapidly swirling clouds formed the most beautiful shapes and the semi obscured sun created a backlit stage of theatrical movement as we drank hot coffee to keep warm.

  • The wind was blowing in from the west and with it came drizzle. The lake was vast and waves fetched from the persistent breeze. The reeds rustled as they bent in the gusts towards the figure of a beautiful young woman.<br />
<br />
I stood in the darkness of the forest edge, watching nature move all about me. The boughs of the trees creaking, twigs snapping against each other and even the sound of the tiny surf crashing on the lakeshore. The woman seemed to be the only motionless object in this blustery, dull weather.

  • It is hard to get a good angle on both these impressive buildings, especially in the right light, but this evening everything just seemed to fall into place. The warm dead bracken compliments the colours of this beautiful but now disused historic dovecot. With an original wishing well just up a footpath, this place is steeped in history.

  • A year and a half on from my March Mist Series 2003, the Menai Suspension Bridge was once again shrouded in heavy mist. I was down at the water's edge at breakfast time and it was warm but quite eerie. From this angle, it was hard to see any of the pre rush hour traffic and in the silence, I was able to consider just how old and beautiful this bridge is, and the events and people in history that it's witnessed.

  • An icy cold but beautiful day in the snowy mountains of the lower Carneddau. The walk which we planned to finish in 5 hours had to be shortened drastically as thick snowdrifts made progress unbelievably slow. We cut out two peaks just below the summits, to save time, but still ended up on dangerous unconsolidated snow which hid treacherous ankle snapping sinks into streams below, as we headed down into the Aber valley in near darkness. Lessons to be learned for sure.

We had just come up from Tre'r onto the summit of Garn Ganol. The hill fog had been very thick, swirling in a clammy wet blanket about us which was very atmospheric but also blocked all the views. Here however, the cloud suddenly parted and revealed beautiful patches of sunlit Llyn Landscape. Even the cameramen were ecstatic about the weather phenomenon before us - stunning.

  • The Celtic Cross shaped memorial at the highest point of ChurchIsland stands proud, just, above the fog draped Menai Strait.Though the fog obscured much of the view, the extreme low tide revealed a landscape not often seen.<br />
<br />
On the way to work that Friday, I couldn't even see the end of our road for thick fog! As I had all my kit with me for a day's studio shooting, I drove via the bridges to see what atmospheric effects might be occurring. Whilst approaching the first lay-by, I saw a beautiful recessional tonal layering of tall trees disappearing into thick fog, almost top-lit by the weak early morning sun. However by the time I'd parked the van the fog has shifted and the recessional effect had reduced, so I walked right down to the edge of the Menai Strait to see whether either of the bridges would show through. This time I had the opposite problem where the fog was so thick I couldn't even see the field alongside me or more than 30 ft out onto the silent Strait. I trudged along a damp, muddy and waterlogged foreshore eventually meandering back up the misty fields to the road. Ironically, from this elevation, higher above the Strait, and with the sun starting to back-light the fog, I enjoyed several stunning variations of view from just a 200 yd stretch of road. The light, sunshine and fog were all dancing across the fast water when regrettably, I had to leave to open the gallery at 10.00 :-(

  • Retreating off the summit as huge sheets of rain swept across the peninsula, a most beautiful rounded granite boulder stood proud against the dark stunted vegetation all round. The wind ruffled the grasses as drops of rain started spitting in my face and then the stone sphere glistened under a torrential downpour, just one of millions in it's own process of shaping and growing older.

  • "I was off the beaten track amongst acres of dark, ancient trees. As is often the case in these environments, it's possible to 'sense' clearings in the forest simply by watching out for changes in illumination. These open windows burn with light from the skies above so I headed in that direction. She was lithe, sensuous and beautiful, basking on a lichen-covered rock. She luxuriated in the contrast between the cool stone beneath her arched back and the warmth of afternoon sunshine bathing her loins.<br />
<br />
She was alone in her own space, far from the multitudes, simply enjoying the wonder of the nature around her.  Nothing concerned her for she was the apex creature in this world. A Stonechat chirped in the distance and two Ravens called to each other in flight above. Tiny summer flies moved silently from shadows to light and the sound of bees collecting pollen, hummed in the still air.

In brief glimpses through thick fog and heavy cloud, stunning recessional hills appeared, illuminated by subtle rays of weak afternoon sunshine, beautiful. In the far distance is Elidir Fawr, then the rounded peak of Mynydd Mawr, and finally the lower peaks of the Nantlle Ridge.<br />
<br />
Views from the peaks of Tre'r Ceiri, an  Iron Age settlement / fortress steeped in Brythonic history of kings and tribes from the Dark Ages on Snowdonia's Llyn Peninsula. <br />
<br />
Clouds and fog swirl around these peaks but when the fog clears, stunning views are to be had of the surrounding countryside. This place is ethereal, spiritual and always changing. The sense of past is strong and the identity with people living on this Iron Age hill top since the dark ages is potent.

  • We found ourselves driving up a volcanic hillside along a heavily rutted dirt track, unable to turn around or reverse back, when all of a sudden we topped the brow of the hill and discovered amazing views and a beautiful textural landscape, as if painted by Andrew Wyeth! Rich earth contrasted with drab greys and sharp grass, shrubs and rock somehow seemed soft when viewed overall.

  • It was still winter, the rock was icy cold and the bitter rough surface of the curved rock, normally a sun-bed in summer, was freezing her skin. Yet, in the windless air, those afternoon rays of sunshine gave her some relief. She relished the pleasure and the pain and stretched out abandoned to the sensations. Her skin was tight, but textured to touch, thousands of goosebumps working hard to keep her warm.<br />
<br />
I’d never seen anything so incredible, not just the amazing landscape but that it cradled such a gorgeous woman. I walked over to her, took hold of her hand and whispered, “You’re beautiful!" She turned towards me, smiled and we kissed, warmth burning between us in the rocky wilderness that we had found ourselves in.

  • It was baking hot, so hot the sand burned your naked souls. The cool Atlantic Ocean was the only escape but standing at the waters edge the rip was clear and the water deep . As wave after relentless wave crashed on this exposed West coast I would have to endure the midday sun for a short swim would have become a long and dangerous drift. The place was beautiful and spectacular nevertheless

  • I love the way the virgin snow of the drift seems to funnel upwards like an ice cream cone before exploding outwards across the sky in a 180º spread. <br />

Sneezing, coughing and nose blowing, I left the van and with eyes as blurred as looking through milk bottle bases I arrived at these ancient stepping stones. I had enough sense to plan for the tide this time as I wanted to see the stones surrounded by high water unlike my previous shot "Out of Sadness Came Forth Joy". A VERY different story today, and although I was feeling below par, the light was absolutely beautiful, sharp, crisp and intense. The skies were dramatic and the clouds voluptuous and swelling. I took great delight in jumping the stones across the deep blue water, just for the sheer hell of it. The surrounding water was incredibly calm and reflective with just the smallest signs that actually the tide was flooding

  • We have been extremely lucky on Ynys Môn not to have suffered the catastrophic flooding of elsewhere in the UK, and indeed I've been captivated by the sheer beauty of partially drowned landscapes that are normally so dry. The low-level flooding transformed everyday nothingness into beautiful textured mirrors of late winter skies. As I studied the delicateness of these water-logged grasses, I heard the first skylark of the year, and with it my heart lifted and I was imbued with hope for the future.

  • Another fantastic day walking in the Welsh mountains, this time with my gorgeous lady. It was bitterly cold as we started up the hill, and then when we reached the col the breeze chilled it even further. The sun started to come out from beneath a huge blanket of grey cloud and we enjoyed a hint of warmth on the ascent to the frost covered summit. We didn't hang around at the summit at all, as we knew we'd be in the dark on the final freezing leg back down the Northern bluff to the car park. Couldn't resist however, taking these images as we left the summit and faced the setting sun. Beautiful, wonderful, magical afternoon in real Wales, with Jani

  • I was totally surprised. I rarely visit this beautiful location any more due to the sheer numbers of people heading there to photograph it 24 hours a day. <br />
<br />
With the thick fog of the morning, and it being a bank holiday I had little hope of grabbing a snap without a dozen others there already, but apart from the hamlet of camper vans parked there overnight, there was literally no one near the lighthouse. The early morning start this time had paid off. <br />
<br />
There were moments when I couldn’t see the lighthouse at all, and others when there was temporary clarity, but the pale limestone path formed a wonderful curving connection through the weight of the fog to the lighthouse itself. <br />
<br />
I hand-held all my shots here and escaped before the crowds appeared. I felt for a few brief moments that it was my place once again.

  • The beach was almost deserted but the 1000s of footprints of man and animal showed the life the beach supported throughout this Spring day. I watched mesmerised as wave after consecutive wave pushed further up the beach, smoothing out the imperfections, eradicating the evidence of human presence, making the sand virginal once more. The rising tide created beautiful calm pools, in which the dramatic sky was perfectly reflected accompanied by the increasing sound of nearing surf at the shoreline

  • Within 2 minutes I was in Llanfaelog and the most spectacular view presented itself, a full moon right behind an amazing flood-lit church of St Faelog. Even though I was in a blinding hurry, I decided to stop the van and shoot the scene anyway. Actually the moon and church weren't in the ideal alignment for the composition I wanted but by bracing my tripod over the steps of the church, I could just create a composition that worked. I shot about four exposures at varying shutter speeds to get the right cloud coverage of the moon (so much more interesting than the moon alone) and as I was making the last exposure, a huge silent white Barn Owl glid across the scene in front of me, straight out of a Tim Burton film :-) Of course with 20 second exposures there was no chance of me recording this beautiful creature, but it will always be there in memory and will always remain magical. There were other movements in the graveyard, rustles, snaps and slithers but I couldn't actually see anything. At one point I felt something brush against my trousers but still saw nothing.

  • I've never seen so much Honeysuckle in Cornwall as on this trip. The cliff-tops were lush this year, and the pathways were adorned with the most beautiful clumps of this intricate, colourful and heavily scented plant. On this dark and dreary day, the perfume and hues in many ways lightened the mood of the day. I shot this particular plant as I loved the contrast between the soft beauty of the Honeysuckle and the sharp, edgy, ripping trip wires of the brambles..
