Field drainage water pours out through a water channel into the Irish Sea here at Porth Cwyfan. The 13th Century, Eglwys Cwyfan (St Cwyfan's Church), not far from the small village of Aberffraw on Anglesey's West coast, at one time stood on the mainland coast but over the years, the sea has eroded the surrounding land leaving it stranded on it's own little island. Services are still occasionally held here but times are tide dependent.

  • A Monday evening. I'd gone out to catch some surf but it was seriously blown out in some very heavy gales and was just mush, so I took some shots instead :-) The very low evening sunlight was blitzing the coast with an amazing intensity, as powerful in it's own way as the pounding waves. Where the waves were smashing over this set of rocks the plumes of spray were being backlit turning them a rich orange/gold. However, as you can see from the foreground I was basically IN the sea, with no tripod so for the first time in my memory, I have deliberately cropped the original a little to show just the bits I wanted. Theoretically it would have been easier for me to change lens but the sea spray was so intense that I didn't fancy a £5K sensor covered in salt water - so there you go, probably my first ever forced crop! :-((((

  • This is the upper lake just below the summit of Elidir Fawr, which is streamed into huge pipes which feed the 4 turbines in the power station 500 meters below. The water is pumped back up at night when demand is low and pumping costs are least.

  • And so it was, at about 4.00 pm, I headed for the West Coast of Anglesey, as usual, to catch the dipping sun. I turned up at one of my favourite spots and ambled, totally arbitrarily along the shoreline, enjoying the water, the sounds, the heat and colours of the warm sun and the glistening rocks emerging from the receding tide. Funnily enough, the stark sunshine, at this time of day, at least creates strong shadows, long shadows and sparkling sea tops. As it sank lower the colours intensified further and amazing hues resulted, almost, but not quite unbelievable.

  • Alone on a deserted beach - paradise. Thank God there still remain places here on this small Isle of Anglesey where you can escape the crowds and be at peace. The tide was dropping, sucking water out of the sand bar and with it the light reflections. A central core of light pulled me into the water, into the deep and into happiness.

  • A hillside tree is sillouetted by dramatic sunlight reflecting off the vast bay of Traeth Coch, (Red Wharf Bay) which at low tide reveals a pattern of sand cusps in the wet sand which reflect the bright sunshine. Small figures at the water's edge on the shoreline show the scale of this beach. <br />

Following a specific location request from one of my customers, I found myself (almost) lost outside Llangoed on a warm late summer's afternoon. The sunshine back-lit the leaves of lush overgrown lanes as Cara Dillon sang to me in the front of the van. The hedgerows literally brushed past me as I ventured into narrower and narrower pathways, crows giving buzzards a temporary reprieve as they laughed at my black VW squeezing it's way out towards the bay.<br />
<br />
The shallow beach at extreme low tide creates huge cusps of sand and water, resembling textile designs from the 1960s! The vicious and burning intensity of the light on the retina was not from the sun itself but from it's reflection on the wet sand. Although I tried to compose using peripheral vision I still was left temporarily blinded after shooting some frames.<br />
<br />
Of course the contrast between the sunlit sand and the dry areas surrounding, meant the contrast was of the scale. To me, this was wonderful though, for just as looking towards the light blinded me, I found the fake shadows to be a beautiful and textural contrast, absolutely stunning.

  • June 2020. Absolutely deserted beach and the mesmerising lure of crystal clear water and open sea. With the world full of virus this short moment of feet in water and and the gentle sound of lapping ripples against thr rocks, was pure medicine, a mental cure.

  • 2011: A young, funny, dynamic, 19-year-old friend of my step kids had gone missing at Christmas, a few
 weeks earlier, apparently having jumped off the Menai Suspension Bridge, but no-one really knew for sure; there were no answers and no closure for his devastated family and close friends. <br />
<br />
I have always gone to the sea for solace and comfort, but after this event, the sea represented something very different – swallowing, concealing. I was thinking about how lucky I was to simply be there, to breathe, to see, to live.<br />
 <br />
The sunshine was sparkling on the water, the grass was lush and green, clouds scudded across a now clear sky and there was a cool crispness to the air; my fingers felt it, my face felt it, every bit of me was now awake and invigorated, but I wished I knew what had happened to the lad. We all guessed at scenarios but nobody dared say anything, living in hope that our worst fears would be proved wrong. It was very hard for me to be near the sea so soon after his disappearance.<br />
 <br />
I moved on to the main estuary at Newborough. The sky was changing already; the forecasted week of rain had started to develop on the horizon, a darkness drew closer and the sparkle was gone. There were still sheets of hopeful, bright patches of sky over the hills, and the last intensity of sunshine was spilling over the peninsula. I walked in shallow water across the open estuary, surrounded by sheets of mirrored sky that contained a lonely half moon looking down at me.’ <br />

  • The apparent calm belies real danger in this narrow stretch of water. The multi coloured pebbles and stones have been brought down from nearby mountain ranges by glaciers, and are contstantly swept back and forth by vicious tidal currents in this lonely area. The gentleness of Abermenai point is very deceptive when you consider the number of ships and boats that have been tided in these dangerous currents and wrecked on sand bars in very shallow waters.

  • At low tide in the Afon Braint Estuary, Anglesey North Wales at sunset. Millions of tiny shells and Ragworm casts are revealed on the vast expanse of sand and silt. Oystercatchers, Curlews and numerous other waders feed on this vast expanse of rich estuary. Shallow rivers and streams of warm water continue to flow down to the low tide mark even as the tide starts to rise once again.

  • An ebb tide reveals multi-coloured pillow-lava at Llanddwyn on West Anglesey. Many people have asked if the colours have been retouched in the computer, which they are not.When you are on a beach most pebbles look rather drab, but wet them in the water and they reveal rich vibrant colours. Imagine this on a bigger scale, where a whole reef of mineral rich rock becomes wet from the sea, and you’ll then understand why there was no need to use software to embelish this image

  • When the crowds have gone and the leagues of dog walkers have departed for tea, the beach releases its true magic. I’ve always been fascinated by the cleansing effect of an incoming tide. I love watching the mess of footprints disappear as a new virgin floor of sand smoothes its way up the beach in front of my eyes. It’s even better when evening pulls a dark blanket of silence over the noise pollution of the day.<br />
<br />
I crouched almost at sand level, the tripod legs repeatedly covered by salty water and I enabled the fast motion of the rapid tide to move everything in the image other than the ancient rocks themselves. I walked back across the huge beach and up along the deep river in darkness. True harmony.

The salt flats here produce more than 15,000 tons of salt a year, although that’s only a third of the quantity produced 40 years ago.The method of salt extraction was introduced in 1895 and has changed little since last century. Large wooden staves known as palancas de madera, are employed, with sea water passing through narrow channels into ponds where the water simply condenses.The residue then passes through wooden ducts into salt pans where the process is completed, leaving bright sparkling crystals of salt.

This water can be released in less than a minute when the UN grid needs an urgent  energy boost, and is pumped up during off peak cheaper times at night, from the lake of Llyn Dinas in the Llanberis Pass.

  • On such an arid, black island, it was quite a surprise to find such a lush green lagoon, here on the West Coast of Lanzarote at Club La Santa, the health resort for elite international athletes. <br />
<br />
As the tide slowly crept in, the tiny creeks and channels were full of crabs and small fish, changing positions and locations as the water level rose. The banks looked green because of an abundance of succulent plants that seemed to thrive in this salt water lagoon.

  • You have to visit St Ives just to witness the absolute clarity of the water beneath you. There are so many viewpoints where you can just stand and stare into the deep waters below and still make out the bottom. I've seen dolphins somersaulting just off the quay and seals regularly swim with the kids in the harbour, which from above looks just like an aquarium! I have always been fascinated by flotation and I love the way the boat on the surface aids our perception of the depth beneath.

  • I looked around because I could hear people talking but there was no one there. I moved across the beach shooting a couple of frames of the boulders and the voices were getting louder. I was expecting to see a small group of people appearing in the valley at any moment to ruin my peace.<br />
<br />
The people never did appear, not because they had diverted or turned back, but because they never existed. As I drew closer to the left hand side of the beach the talkers revealed themselves. A fast flowing stream was carving it's way down the beach and some small boulders were caught in a white water trap, endlessly rolling round and round, air trapping, gurgling currents holding the stones in deep flowing conversation.

  • The advancing tide pushed small wavelets across the expanse of wet sand, smoothing and erasing the signs of the day upon it. For the first time in the year the touch of water on bare flesh was not unpleasant but rather soothing, providing optimism for the summer ahead.<br />
<br />
The gentle slopes of the beach formed wonderful curving wave patterns in the shallow water - and each wave reflected the sunlight at different angles creating a dance of light across the sea surface.

  • Lockdown Day 4 <br />
<br />
I can’t swim in this little pool as it’s just too small, yet it is my oasis. Today I just ducked under the surface and like a goldfish in a bowl, I studied my sunlight-dappled perimeter and worked my way around in circles.<br />
As I left the water, the breeze chilled my body and the roar of the ocean down the road made me feel as if I was on a beach. Oh to be swimming in open water again this summer maybe?<br />

  • Jubilee Pool is an Art Deco lido on the Penzance promenade. Today was the last day open to swimmers before closure for winter. The sun sparkled on the water but a cool breeze blew in from the West, ruffling the pool surface and bringing with it grey threatening clouds. It’s always sad for me, the end of Summer.

  • The forecast was for mixed weather but thankfully we never ‘quite’ saw rain. Here on the coast of West Penwith a river tumbles down through the boulders to join the Atlantic Ocean. Brief moments of sunshine illuminated the flowing water and everything sparkled. The clouds closed in, the wind increased and the cold intensified but my mood was as bright and alive as the view I was offered.

The present Penmon lighthouse at 29m tall was erected between 1835 and 1838. It was converted to solar power in 1996 and it's 15,000 candela light can be seen 12 nautical miles away. It also has a fog bell which sounds every thirty seconds.

  • ".............I wandered at a slow pace along the water's edge, fascinated by the shifting arrangements of clouds, waves, wet sand and reflections. I loved the balancing act between wave forms, sand patterns and racing cumuli.  A little lady in green wellies marched ahead of me for most of the walk, fortunately leaving only evaporating footprints in the saturated sand. By the time I had reached the arch and a small cove within a beach, the little lady had finished her stroll, turned on her heels and disappeared back in the direction of the sheltered village, leaving me alone to enjoy the unspoilt beach.......'

  • I sat above the vast bowl of Cwm Marchlyn just staring at the dark water in the reservoir below. Random gusts from a stiff breeze punched the surface of the lake creating the most wonderful and mesmerising abstract movies. It was impossible to tell where the next impact flower would appear. I was lost in the performance as the wind sang to me through the rocks I was crouched amongst.

  • Snip from blog: "As the light dropped even lower, and I realised my new Petzl head-torch might be used for real for the first time, low level contrasts and longish exposures actually ignited some interest in me, and I even had fun deliberately using my head-torch light on the dark foreground waters. This light was my mark - my signature that I was there, fighting to show my existence in an advancing nothingness. I saw this as a metaphor, in that sometimes there is a necessity to make one's light shine, no matter how incongruous, in the never-ending global story of repetition, emulation and predictability :-)"

  • Pedny, as the beach natives call it, a phenomenally striking beach with white sands, granite cliffs and crystal clear waters, facing across the Atlantic down to the Antarctic! Only accessible at very low tide or by scrambling down a steep footpath and rocks to the beach itself. For years thankfully the sole domain of hardy naturists and keen rock climbers (not necessarily both, though I did tick that box!) but now due to exhaustive use of it's location in tourist advertising, is quietly losing it's magic, with teams of neoprene clad families with body boards, tents, wind-breaks and picnic boxes braving the descent to textile cover the once free beach. Fortunately, at high tide the beach really does get cut off by the huge Atlantic ocean, and this forces away most of the crowds leaving small patches of bare beauty, and peace and quiet once again, save for the few who know the secret escape routes

  • Although it looks like a beautiful Summer’s evening, this picture was taken one February and five minutes after this scene, a thick, heavy and freezing fog swirled in from the sea and I could hardly see in front of me.   The upside to winter photography is that you have the beach to yourself; undisturbed sand and the chance to immerse yourself in the sensory joys of simply ‘being’ and becoming enraptured by the drama of nature.

  • Behind an old watermill, sits the huge Wylfa Magnox nuclear power station. It is situated close to Cemaes Bay on the North of the island of Anglesey, North Wales. Its location on the coast provides a cooling source for its operation. It is the world's oldest nuclear power station and became operational in 1971

  • I was struck by the simultaneous approach of dusk as the big light of the sun goes out, and also the switching on of the little household lamp in the cottage to the right. We take so much for granted these days that a little flick of the switch means we can continue to work and play through the dark hours, but that at one time night was something to be revered or even feared.

  • An expansive Braint Estuary, Llanddwyn, Isle of Anglesey, at mid tide still exposing acres of sand just a few centimeters below the surface. The sea lies beyond the range of sand dunes in the distance, as do the hills of the Llyn Peninsula and the well known 3 peaks of Yr Eifl on the mainland.

Banks of clouds reared overhead and all light intensity disappeared. I walked at a fast pace back along the beach, much closer to the sand dunes this time, as the advancing tide had drowned the sand bars.".

  • A Malaysian bulk carrier is moored up alongside the Anglesey Aluminium Wharf in Holyhead Harbour. This shot was taken from the very top deck above the bridge, looking towards an oil rig in for repairs. The huge breakwater in the background is what makes this such a well protected harbour.

  • The sun had long set, but in the gathering dusk the subtle hues still looked beautiful. There was barely a breath of wind and only the gentlest of soft ripples radiated across this false bay. A young couple slowly and quietly beached a canoe on a distant pebble bank, two micro figures in a vast watercolour landscape.

  • As I wound my way down the tiny lane to the foreshore, I had to stop for six cars and vans, some towing powerboats and jet skis, which surprised me during this lockdown. There were a further three cars parked up in the tiny parking area but thankfully I found a space and there was no one actually to be seen. <br />
<br />
I really wanted this slipway in the foreground with the town of Y Felinheli on the far side of the Afon Menai, basking in evening sunlight. Sadly, just two minutes after arriving, the sun disappeared behind a massive cloud bank and the orange floodlight simply faded away.

  • Sitting on the reef watching an incoming tide, bathed in warm early Spring sunshine, we were filled with hope and optimism for the Summer ahead. We drank hot coffee and ate home made sugared almond cake from a lovely German friend of ours. <br />
<br />
As much as we enjoy the wild drama of the winter light and weather, we both crave the sunshine and warmth and a beach life. This was like an early injection of happiness.

  • Menai Suspension Bridge (Welsh: Pont Grog y Borth) which is a stone built Victorian suspension bridge between the island of Anglesey and Bangor and mainland of Wales. The 100ft high bridge was designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1826.

  • SNIP from BLOG: "The sun briefly popped out splattering fire everywhere, and then turned to a hot red glow on the horizon, quenched after 15 minutes by a cold blue sea. Banks of clouds reared overhead and all light intensity disappeared. I walked at a fast pace back along the beach, much closer to the sand dunes this time, as the advancing tide had drowned the sand bars.".

  • I sometimes find myself in dark places and it’s easy to close your eyes to shut it all out, but from out of nowhere I usually become aware of the gentlest glow of light. The delicate light is normally enough to see how to move forward. Once I’ve found the path everything seems brighter and the ominous clouds gradually move back to the horizon.<br />
<br />
The large limestone stepping stones of Rhydd Gaer (The Blood Fort) , cross the Afon Braint River south of the village of Dwyran on Anglesey. The river itself leads to the Braint Estuary where it joins the Menai Strait and Caernarfon Bay. There is little agreed information about the history of these historical stones

  • An extreme low tide revealed sections of sand bars I'd never seen before and at this distance even the dog walkers hadn't managed to destroy the purity of the sand sculptures. The sea was almost silent, the sun warm but the wind cold. I was the only one for miles on this end of the beach and I walked home alone.

  • A Malaysian bulk carrier is moored up alongside the Angleey Aluminium Wharf in Holyhead Harbour. This shot was taken from the very top deck above the bridge, looking towards an oil rig in for repairs. The huge breakwater in the background is what makes this such a well protected harbour.

  • There was nothing set up about this image. The wood was actually there, partially embedded in the soft sands of Silver Bay as the waves washed over it on the incoming tide. In the background a gentle sun illuminated the rear of a heavy blanket of rain cloud, sending a pink glow into the air. The shift between the warm and cool ends of the spectrum were subtle and delicate, absolutely beautiful.

  • A last minute race to the far coast to catch the last rays of sunshine after a chore packed day which should have been spent photographing anyway! The sky was blue and featureless, even at dusk, but the intensity of light and shadow on the wet beach, amazingly footprint free, was captivating!
